Where I live the Civil War was once commonly referred to as “The War of Northern Aggression.” Many in the South did not, understandably, see the war in a broad political perspective but only as a deadly force that appeared out of the north and ravaged their lives.

I am constantly thinking of it as the war for Southern independence but I think it was more accurately named “The war of Northern aggression”

Many in the South did not, understandably, see the war in a broad political perspective but only as a deadly force that appeared out of the north and ravaged their lives. As William Sherman said, "War is the remedy our enemies have chosen." Having chosen war to further their aims the South cannot blame anyone but themselves that it didn't turn out the way that they wanted.
