Devoutly Desiring Depression
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 12/09/2007 4:33:14 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Steve Fraser might look mild-mannered, but when it comes to economic doomsaying, he is the Rocky Marciano of recession, the Tiger Woods of turndown, the David Beckham of depression.

Speaking of bending one, Fraser's LA Times column of today, "Symptoms of an Economic Depression," twists U.S. economic data into a harbinger of impending doom. Fraser begins by falsely claiming that "no one wants to utter the word 'depression.'" In fact, Fraser himself, a left-wing labor historian, wants not merely to utter the word, but to bellow it with a 10,000 megawatt bullhorn. Why? Because, as he predicts in that same column:

This perfect storm [of a bad economy] will be upon us just as the election season heats up, and it will inevitably hasten the already well-advanced implosion of the Republican Party.

Trying to follow the logic of a left wing moonbat is impossible! Hype inflation and it becomes true? Some folks can’t wait to watch other people suffer financial ruin & you don’t need to be a mind reader to find the political party affiliated with misinformation (Liberal Lunatics without Shame)

There are forum members who wish the same. Not as many as there once were, but we have our own doom and gloom cheerleaders.

He has a lot of fellow travellers. And a useful idiot or two.

I have become amazed, that locally, one can LOOK at a person and often detect liberalism.

Really.

The men are ugly, with either a hateful scowl or a condescending fake smile, and appear dateless.

The women, (The ones who are not checking out women) appear similarly.

The individual pictured has bad memories of Gym Class.

I fear the deflationary impact of unprecedented debt.

It MUST be inflated away because of the fragility of our multiculutral fault lines.

Inflate or die.

No, we have some who wish for it . . . hoping that it will lead to the dissolution of the corporate Republican Party, and a emergence of a Third (Party) Reich.

No, we have some who wish for it.

If so, I would say they have issues.

Dollar to a dime this guy is also wishing for thousands of dead American troops in Iraq, so as to hasten our withdrawal and discredit the Republicans (and evil Bush).

That said, we have built an economy strongly supported by, not only debt, but very dubious forms of debt. I'm not suggesting that we can't deal with these flaws and avoid some sort of economic crunch. I am saying though that we will have to face up to some of these things or we will have severe consequences to face.

Rather than crying and wailing about the impending end of western civilization (indeed, hoping for it) as this dipstick is doing, we ought to view these things as challenges that we can & will deal with.

Though the Huns may be at the gates............

I wonder how many of our doomers are really Steve Fraser?

Why single out Fraser for doomist thinking? We have plenty of people on this forum who have been predicting financial disaster (”just your wait, we’ll all be unemployed next year”)since I joined this forum almost ten years ago. Some people must feel an urge to predict disaster whatever the data says.
