Governor Donald L. Carcieri today issued the following statement regarding the Rhode Island Supreme Court ruling denying the request of a same sex couple married in Massachusetts to divorce in Rhode Island.

“I believe this is the appropriate result based on Rhode Island law,” Governor Carcieri said. “It has always been clear to me that Rhode Island law was designed to permit marriage – and therefore divorce – only between a man and a woman.”

“While I understand the Supreme Court’s statement that the General Assembly is the appropriate venue for this public policy issue to be decided, I strongly believe that this type of fundamental change to the laws that govern our society should only occur with the approval of the people of Rhode Island at a referendum,” the Governor said. “Altering our marriage laws is such an important question that the decision should not be made by the courts, the legislature or the Governor. This decision should only be made by the Rhode Island public.”

A referendum would be the kiss of death for gay marriage anywhere. Any place where they have made inroads it has always been through connivance with their fellow elitists on the bench.

In a state as “blue” as RI this is a gutsy move.A statement like this could cost him politically.

Polls here in the Gay State (Massachusetts) have consistently shown that homosexual "marriage" would be defeated in a referendum. That's why our state legislature...about 90% of whom are RATS of the most despicable kind...saw to it that the question won't appear on the ballot.

I am shocked and pleased when any politician of note defends traditional marriage in this benighted New England.

Not really, the Democrats in the General Assembly have a veto proof majority in both the House and the Senate and Carcieri just won re election last year and is term limited out. Governor Carcieri is the one sane voice in State Government and he takes a beating day in and day out here. The Providence Journal has declared an editorial jihad on the conservative politics of this Governor.

Yes they do. I think the gay marriage issue shows there is venerability in the North if the GOP would just use the issue as well as financial issues to attack the Democrat occupiers.
The people in so many Democrat run states pay huge amounts in taxes and are getting very little in return. Why the GOP can not or will not speak to “the people” in these states I can not understand. Instead they run campaigns like they are running for a school board election. The way to win elections in the snowy north is to generate enough heat to melt through the snow.

The Providence Journal is controlled by Belo out of Dallas. Texas. Until the current generation, Belo was conservative. The good news is that the liberals now in charge are rapidly running it into the ground.
