Whose idea was it that the Republican presidential candidates have a Spanish-spoken debate?
Obviously it was an attempt to woo Latino voters, at the same time, make an attempt to quell the perceived bashing immigrants are taking nowadays.
After Sunday nights debate, the media has taken many angles on this attempt. Some consider the olive branch a noble gesture, while some have taken the opportunity to lecture the GOP about our nations strong Spanish-speaking heritage, while reminding us of the strides Latinos have made to master Americas official tongue.

They had a debate? In Spanish? I’d love to see the TV ratings on that turkey.

I am unable to grasp why immigrants, who have worked hard to gain US citizenship would have any good feelings for those who illegally enter.
Gagging, the man dials 911 for help, only to hear a recorded message that says, For Spanish, press one; for Korean, press two; for Bengali, press three. In a few minutes, the man has collapsed and lays sprawled on the floor, semiconscious, the receiver still in his hand, and the recording still playing, for Swahili, press 12"
The moral of the story?
Turn off that TV and go to the shooting range more often.
Since I hadn’t plan to waste time and see/hear it, I forgot all about his nutty debate.
Point well taken.
Thank you.
They were probably good here in Tucson where the forecast is for the city to be more than half Hispanic within the next couple of years. BTW.. the population here is close to 1 million and they are flooding across the border in battalion strength through what the paper described as the nations "death corridor".
I believe the candidates spoke English and they had translators. Interposing a translator between you and your target sems like a good way to show you are NOT one of them.
The USA has no official language. English is still dominant, but it has no official status.
They were primarily Cuban republican voters. The only big boos of the night were for Ron Paul and his comments about wanting to deal with Castro and Chavez.
I speak Spanish, and I watched it. It was a pander-fest. Ron Paul got huge rounds of applause. You have to remember that Univision has vested financial interest in ensuring that people continue to speak Spanish as their sole, or principle, language. It is to Univision’s benefit that the network remains Spanish-speaking immigrants’ primary conduit for political information, and Spanish-only enhances Univision’s clout.
“Now that weve had a Spanish language debate, whens the next scheduled debate for Chinese speaking Americans, or the Armenian-as-a-second-language debate, or the Tagalog-English debate?”
And that is the whole point. But Americans of Chinese, Armenian, German, Japanese, Greek, etc, ancestry aren’t the ones demanding this bi-lingual crap.
Its past time America decalred ENglish the official languae, STOPPED putting Spanish/English versions of everything on government documents and business communications and demanded that only English be the “official” language of communication in the governmental, business and public forums of America.
If hey want to speak Spanish at home - fine - let them. Everybody should learn as many languages as possible. Its good mental exercise and lingusitics is an interesting subject.
But every County needs an official language for communication and Spanish is not it here.
As someone who is Native American (partly), I demand a debate in all Native languages. We are legally recognized as independent nations by treaty and thus, are allowed to keep our language while still being represented members of the USA. We should have our equal time.
Now, we have about 120 unique languages, some are almost lost, so it is time to start searching for some dictionaries.
//s
“..so it is time to start searching for some dictionaries.”
And funding research for compiling the same as many speakers of these languages are only a few and are on in years. Most unfortunately, the great wealth of Native American languages is being lost with each generation and the younger generations demonstrate less and less interest in their culture. So many words we consider “American” Mississippi, Naragansett, Mount Hope, Canarsie, Alleghany, Omaha, Iowa, Alabama, etc, are based on Native American words and in most cases, the original meanings are lost as the speakers of these languages no longer survive.
Point well taken.
You are required to learn English to become a US Citizen, so it is at least the official language of US Citizens, and they are the only ones legally allowed to vote in the Presidential Election.
The transcript of this debate can be found here. Post #30 has much better formatting and is much easier to read.
