This also points out 1 of the gaping flaws in the impersonal magnetic “credit” do-it-yourself schemes.
I think we should take up a collection for the oil companies. If they lower the prices anymore they will just miss reaping record profits for this quarter. Somebody post an address where we can send the money.
The station was doing the public a favor by allowing them to pump gas by credit card when the station was closed, and they took advantage of a mistake.
If I were the station owner, I'd shut my pumps down at closing time from now on.

32.9 cents is the state gasoline tax - per gallon.
Which makes me curious about whether or not a price was entered at all. It would seem that the tax is one preset value and the “cost” of gas would be another.
A full on giveaway.
At my college, an ATM machine was restocked incorrectly (20s in place of 10s....this was back when you could get $10 bills out of an ATM, I know I'm dating myself).
Anyhoo, the kids went wild and cleaned out the ATM. Of Course, there was a record of all their transactions, and their bank accounts were adjusted accordingly. LOL!

Paying the programmed price is not stealing. What the pump charges IS the price. Period.
Businesses don’t accept credit cards because they are benevolent. Sheesh. If you don’t accept cards you don’t get business!
The owner should not and probably will not lose a penny. Anyone that has been around food service knows the waiter or waitress pays for unwrung or stiffed items. The employee that made this mistake should pay every penny of what was lost. He alone is responsible and won’t make that mistake again should he retain his employment.
The owner has no legal recourse what-so-ever. The people paid what he was charging.
What will really be hilarious is if the station owner can have the cards that were used to make those purchases at the wrong price charge an adjustment to correct the error. Since each transaction had to record the number of gallons purchased and the price per gallon charged, it would probably be fairly easy to facilitate the adjustment. Furthermore, it would be perfectly legal to do so since the correct price was posted on the signs at the station.
