Its theft.

If a bank leaves its vaults open over night and someone steals the money, it is still theft.

They should get the credit card numbers and get their money back.

Couple years ago a local station left its pumps on by oversight when the station was closed and purchases were supposed to be by credit card only. When I came back Monday to pay for the ten gallons I pumped, they said that was all of it, everybody else had also come back to pay when the station was open.

Not at all....employee set the price (on purpose or by accident) , consumers paid with credit cards with their personal data vs any tampering with pumps etc etc . No dark of night robbery. IMHO not a snowballs chance in hell of recovering their loss due stupidity or ignorance of an employee trusted to set such controls.
