“This is why Jesus told us to keep “swords” (Luke 22:36)”

I dont think I have the same take on that. His word(which cuts both ways) not any weapons so to speak

So what then are the metaphorical meaning of “purse” and “scrip” and “cloak” similarly indicated in the same sentence? and why does He direct them to set them aside at the beginning of the ministry?

Funny how people think those items, and the directive to take them up (mirroring a comparable directive earlier to set them down) is literal - until we get to the word “sword” in the same breath, which suddenly is some vague metaphor.

Feel free to read that verse exactly as it is written. (Although I would substitute "sword" for "gun".) Jesus was telling his disciples to bring their bags and purses, and without stopping for a breath, to sell their cloak and buy a sword. I don't see how he could have meant that any other way.

So, when the men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees came to the garden to arrest Christ,[ John 18-10] and Peter lopped of the ear of one of the high priest's flunkies, he did it with words?

While the word of god is often referred to as "the sword" or "the sword of the spirit", The actual quote is: "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. (Luke 22:36)

Since you can't buy words, this is obviously a directive to be armed and able to defend yourself and your family, as is your responsibility.

Also see posts 144, 152, & 155 among others. The 'turn the other cheek' is in regards to insults, to be Christian and forgive insults, while the 'sell your cloak and buy a sword' is a clear and obvious call to defend yourself and others...
