Huckabee, Romney, Church and State

The surfacing of the "religion question" in the Republican presidential primary campaigns of both Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee has raised important issues and exposed much public confusion about the intersection of religion and politics.

Secularists feign sympathy with Romney for having to address the Mormon question in response to alleged anti-Mormon bigots but condemn him for failing in his speech to expressly include nonbelievers among those whose religious liberty he would safeguard.

This particular attack on Romney by the secularist bigot patrol reveals their own religious bigotry, their ignorance or their disingenuousness. It goes without saying that robust religious liberty includes the freedom to believe in any religion or not to believe at all.

But the secularists' attacks on Huckabee are more serious. They have taken him to task for identifying himself as a "Christian leader" in Iowa, with some saying he was exploiting Romney's Mormonism and also violating the spirit of the constitutional prohibition on requiring religious tests for public office.

In a campaign ad, Huckabee says, "Faith doesn't just influence me. It really defines me," and he identifies himself as a "Christian leader."

Huckabee is perfectly within his rights to hold himself out as a Christian. Voters are perfectly within their rights to evaluate what that means.

I just hope that fellow Christian conservatives will look beyond the label and not blindly support a Christian candidate who might be way more Christian than conservative. We shouldn't have to choose between the two.

David Limbaugh points out that, while the Huckster may be Christian, he is not conservative.

Huckabee’s religious zeal and rhetoric is creating the perfect storm scenerio for the Democrats. With the Democrat pundits now supporting him and not calling him on his statements, he will get even more outlandish and brazen in in his religious comments.

His religious comments are extreme and invite ridicule from the majority population. He believes that the earth was created 10,000 years ago. We probably have fossils that go back a billion years.

It is very clear that the Left wants Huchabee to be our presidential candidate. They will then in turn eat him alive in the presidential debates.

Huckabee... pardoned a convicted Rapist because the convicted Rapist was “born again” . If anyone has some explaining to do, it is Reverand Huckabee, because it seems he does not seperate church and state.

I guess Huckabee always voted with the “moderate” Southern Baptist! And we all know what that means!
I’m an independent baptists and we never vote on doctrinal issues like those southern baptists. We vote on the preacher’s salary...........lol

"He (Huckabee) believes that the earth was created 10,000 years ago." Aw, that's nothin', Mitt believes god was born and raised in another universe in order to get his body of flesh and bone the founder of Mormonism claimed to have met when he (the founder) was 14 years old. Got anything else to bid for ridiculous beliefs?

Sadly, it is the gist of Mormonism doctrine regarding whom God is. And yes, that is probably the dumbest thing you could read at FR.

Hope seems to be a very active breeding ground for crime:

Hope is also the birthplace of the former governor of Arkansas and current presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee; former White House Chief of Staff Mack McLarty; attorney Vince Foster; Representative Mike Ross; former Louisville, Kentucky mayor David L. Armstrong; former Arkansas Secretary of State Kelly Bryant

There once was a governor named Huck,
Who ran for president with only a Buck.
He laughed and he joked,
And when confronted he choked,
And then that was the end of that bloke.
