She is a better Christian than me. I would extend my sympathies to everyone except the shooter. If my kids were killed by him, I go after his entire immediate family, to send a message to any teenage or early twenties loser that if he does not care about himself, he better think about his parents, siblings, significant other and his own kids. Too many young losers think nothing will happen except to them only. When a couple of these losers hear that one of their own commits a crime and his family dies with him, they may have second thoughts.
I can't at all agree with you.
I would understand, and share, your rage. But taking out your vengeance on innocent people would make you no better than the shooter himself. And vengeance itself is the Lord's, not ours.
What Assam did was self-defense, and defense of her fellow Christians. There is a world of difference between committing such justifiable violence, and committing violence of a vengeful sort.
Also, two other (much less significant, but still meaningful) considerations:
(1) I suspect that such deranged killers generally have very little concern for anyone else, their own families included. So I don't hold to your idea that such a person would have 'second thoughts' if he believed his family would be put in danger as a result of his actions.
(2) There are 'bad seeds' in this world -- deranged people who came from loving parents who are torn apart by their child's evil behaviors. Punishing such unfortunate parents even further would be an abomination.
I doubt that. Most of these angry spree killers don’t have much love for their families. Often, a spree will start with the gunman’s family. But even if they don’t kill their families themselves, the idea of their parents having to live with what their kid has done is an added incentive. So I doubt it’d be much of a deterrent.
