"Single", to my mind, means eligible for marriage. In places and times where a divorcée is not allowed to remarry, such a person is not single; where and when remarriage is allowed, the person is.
Nope, not in the “old days” (which wasn’t that long ago). It’s only the last 15 maybe 20 years everyone is abusing the meaning.
