Fairfax County, Virginia is about to re-draw district boundary lines, which will affect at least 1/4 of the families in that county. School board says this is being done primarily because South Lakes High School, in Reston, is under-enrolled.
Reston, a planned community has a variety of income levels including government project housing for low or no income families. At South Lakes H.S., 1/3 of the students are on free lunch. Gangs have caused problems in the school and fights have been violent.
The school does offer the International Baccalaureate program which has brought in a few serious students, yet the school has been unsuccessful in attracting families to buy homes in the district.
Parents in Fairfax are screaming foul and resent being told that their children are going to be bused to South Lakes. The school board held a community meeting which, although, open to the public, was strictly controlled. Parents arriving at the meeting were given name tags and room assignments so the public was broken up into many small rooms. Facilitators controlled discussions in each room. People were not permitted to oppose the re-districting plan; they were only allowed to vote on which of the 4 plans they preferred. If a person started to express opposition to re-districting, they were asked to leave the room.
Parents are angry that their children will be moved from good schools to a bad one and believe this is all about socio-economic balancing. Also, there has been much concern about property values, and the fact that South Lakes H.S doesn't offer AP classes. Many are not interested in the IB program which they believe is more about creating global citizens instead of U.S. citizens.
Nortern?
“People were not permitted to oppose the re-districting plan; they were only allowed to vote on which of the 4 plans they preferred. If a person started to express opposition to re-districting, they were asked to leave the room.”
Democracy in action...(sarcasm)
What are you going to do? Move to Maryland?
At that point, I probably would have instigated a riot...
How do I know? My younger has taken 5 Virtual Virginia AP course with an average score of 4.5
Reston, VA is “hippyville”. Little do people know that one of the deadlist strains of the ebola virus (Reston Ebola) was engineered there. The test monkeys and facilty were burned to the ground when a potential outbreak was discovered.
Another example of enforced “social equality”—since it’s not possible to make all children equally enamored of learning, then make them all disgusted, frustrated, and bored with school, with the result being level and equal mediocrity. I hope a majority of the parents fight this if they can, and disengage from the system when it’s shown that the education of their children is NOT the primary concern of the weasels behind this social engineering. They are merely pawns in the further instilling of apathy in future generations, the better to make placid sheep of them. Things like this, pop culture, and the diminishing influence of the voice of the people in political matters are all conspiring to produce a docile population.
Sounds like they trying to ‘Delta Poject’ the opposition.
Prince William County?
Those gangs are comprised either of Asians or Hispanics. Given the fact that this is Reston we're talking about, the latter is far more likely.
There's no reason to disrupt 1/4 the school families in the county to do this.
BTW, we just recently had schoolboard elections so these schmucks waited until after the election to announce their plan.
Otherwise, this is a bunch of Democrats who'd been rightly out on the street.
BTW, this will probably cost the Dems the Senate election next fall, and Virginia's electoral votes will go to the Republicans, as well several Dem Congressional seats.
What a stupid bunch of people we have on the school board.
I hope so, because you sure don’t want the People’s Republic of MD!
Yes. Gang is hispanic MS-13.
Well I’m in Howard County...which is no worse than my former residence of Summit County Ohio, they’re both about equally as blue.
We’ll see how things shake out in the next few years.
Why is this not surprising at all?
Of course, I went to Thomas Jefferson, the magnet school in Alexandria, where there are virtually no Hispanics, and the biggest crimes are cheating and graphing calculator theft (an Asian-run theft ring was busted a few years back).
Now, do they have the gang problems at FCPS high schools like Madison, Langley, or McLean? I'm betting on no.
I completely agree.
It has become a nightmare. Two of the school board members own property in Reston and will probably benefit with increase in property value once all the middle and upper middle class kids are bused in.
Here’s another twist. Last December The school board announced that Langley High, which borders South Lakes, was over-enrolled and approved a 7.1 million addition, citing that there were no nearby schools in need of students.
Langly has the big money so we figure the school board didn’t want to upset them. This is one big dirty deal.
With O’Malley, it’s going to be a helluva ride!
