Poll: Romney falls behind Huckabee (Despite airing nearly 18,000 TV/radio ads)

Mitt Romney has lost his lead in recent national polls to sleeper candidate Mike Huckabee despite a mega media blitz this year in which the former Bay State governor bombarded the airwaves with four times more campaign commercials than his seven GOP rivals combined, according to newly released figures.

Romney has spent $21 million on TV and radio ads, while Huckabee launched his first commercials Nov. 26. Even so, the former Arkansas governor has surged ahead of Romney in early-voting Iowa, where Romney has run 7,469 TV ads through the first 11 months of the year, according to Nielsen, a media tracking firm.

Romney has aired nearly 18,000 TV and radio spots in at least nine states from Jan. 1 until Nov. 18, according to figures released yesterday by Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Romney has aired 16,876 local TV spots, nearly 300 national cable ads and 676 radio ads, according to Nielsen.

Republican primary contender Ron Paul followed with 1,454 ads. Fred Thompson had 1,111; front-runner Rudy Giuliani had 881; John McCain had 945; Duncan Hunter had 88; and Tom Tancredo had nine.

Huckabee has a double-digit lead in Iowa, which holds party caucuses Jan. 3. According to the latest Rasmussen poll out of Iowa, Huckabee is in first place with 39 percent of the vote, followed by Romney with 23 percent.

The latest ABC and Washington Post poll has 25 percent supporting Giuliani; 19 percent for Huckabee and 17 percent for Romney.

“It takes three things to be successful in a campaign - resources, organization and message,” said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom. “Mitt Romney has all three, and that is why he is the leader or among the leaders in the early-voting states.”

Topping the Democratic field, Barack Obama has aired 10,311 TV and radio spots, followed by Hillary Clinton with 7,839 and Bill Richardson with 7,305.

Just think where Willard would be if he hadn't aired so many campaign ads. And, National Review Online thinks he is the best candidate running?

Mitt’s real problem is he has the image of a corporate elitist out of touch with the working class.

Tom Tancredo had nine.

Dang. That's only 9 more than me.

I wonder if most Huckabee supporters in Iowa have heard of Wayne Dumond. Romney could run a Willie Horton style add if he had the nerve.

Romney can run as many negative ads as he likes but it isn’t going to make him any more electable.

At 30 seconds a spot, that’s a waste of 4 and a half minutes of everyone’s time.

MSM sez:

“Romney tried to nail Huckabee in the last debate for passing a law giving children of illegal immigrants state-paid college scholarships and in-state tuition rates. Huckabee defended it eloquently, pointing out first that it did not become law — the House of Representatives passed it easily but Republicans blocked it in the Senate — and that he wanted to live in a country that did not punish children for the sins of their parents. (He also said the youngsters would have to have applied for citizenship to get a scholarship, which was not true. The bill said youngsters would have to give the college a statement that they intended to seek legal status some day.)

That bill was not an isolated instance. The highlight of his last two years in office was his running war with Republican lawmakers and the “Shiite wing” of his party — his (Huckabee’s) words — over what he called their bigotry and fearmongering over immigration. He bitterly fought (with Democrat help) a Republican bill restricting government services to U.S. citizens, calling it race baiting and demagoguery, and when the bill failed he condemned a plan to put the same proposal on the ballot and doubted the “Christian values” of the sponsor.”

... Oh Joy.

Huckabee is the hero for fighting for amnesty?!?!?

If it comes down to it and Huckabee wins the nomination the Democrats will run Willie Horton type ads and will relish doing so.

Was listening to Rush today and a college kid caller told Rush that his college friend a hard line Democrat who always is active in politics said he was going to NH on break to work for Huckabee’s campaign. He then asked him why he was working for Huckabee’s campaign when he’s always cheering on the Demorats. His answer was it was a secret.

Huckabee's a complete media creation. He got mentioned in Rolling Stone and suddenly all the 20-something journalists in every corner of the nation wanted to write about him.

I'm sure most of them think he's somehow related to that "I (Heart) Huckabees" movie.

Dumbing down is working.

Mitt’s real problem is he has the image of a corporate elitist out of touch with the working class.

Think the problem is even less esoteric. . .he just need to give up the hair jell.

Too bad; more are not willing to check out real substance. . .recognize the 'values' that shape good people; and good leaders; beyond traditional Christianity. And get passed slick hair.

But seems to me; they do not; and it is looking like, they will not. . .

"Mitt’s real problem is he has the image of a corporate elitist out of touch with the working class."

With his 250 million you too could get that plastic look! Woohoo!

His friends call him "polished" but he looks kind of greasy to me.

I knew Romney was out-advertising everyone else by a large margin, but I didn’t realize the ratio was anywhere near this lopsided!

Romney would get my vote before Huckabee, and that’s saying a whole lot. Matter of fact, it’ll be a cold day in Hell before I ever cast a vote for Huckabee.

Here is a prediction many of you will not like.

Fred Thompson is laying in the fringes of the electoral process like a big Leopard waiting to jump when the Huckster, Romney and Rudy falter in solid conservative state of South Carolina.

South Carolina will be the true test of who will eventually represent the Republicans.

Just a red state wannabe prediction.
