Little over a year ago, ethanol was winning the hearts and wallets of both Main Street and Wall Street, with promises of greater U.S. energy independence, fewer greenhouse gases and help for the farm economy. Today, the corn-based biofuel is under siege.

This fad is quickly running its course, it can't die quickly enough for me.

Anything that needs massive, ongoing subsidies is guilty until proven innocent.

Any country that converts food to fuel (especially while actual fuel is plentiful) has set on a course of national starvation.

Wishful thinking. Too many promises made, government programs funded, loads for ethanol plants in place. I suppose after the mortgage bailout, we’ll have an ethanol bailout...

The oil companies wouldn’t allow their stations to distribute high-ethanol content fuel, so it was a matter of lack of distribution.
The Mid-West co-ops should make ethanol available for their area and let the rest of the country buy $3-$4 gas from our enemies in the Middle East. No sense in letting all their investment go down the drain, and this way they wouldn’t be competing with Big Oil, which will rule till the last drop is used up because they’ve paid off the politicians.

"...an outside expert advising the United Nations on the "right to food" labeled the use of food crops to make biofuels "a crime against humanity,"

i guess, farmers=hate crime practitioners /sarc>

The fortunes of many U.S. farmers and ethanol companies are tied to corn-based ethanol, of which America is the largest producer. Ethanol is also a cornerstone of President Bush's push to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

There you have it my friends; another immortal government subsidy is born.

Where there is a large wealthy constituency and a powerful political backer there is an unending flow of tax dollars.

This article gives me no indication the fuel lobby is losing to the lobbies interested in cheap corn. If you bought MON in the spring, you have made about $50 bucks a share. As soon as the Congress gets a clue, SELL SELL SELL!

I want the crap to go away. My lawn mower and weed eater hate the stuff and my milage in my truck has dropped 15%.

It does not do anything for the enviroment. All it does is get Midwest farmer lobbiest something to root for and politicans elected.

Good points. A 20% net gain in sun-captured energy in a renewable energy source is not good enough but is a piece of the energy independence pie. A 30-40% net energy gain is just around the corner.

The price of corn going through the roof.
Takes sixteen gallons of water to make one gallon of ethanol. Kind of a sick joke really this fad of selling gasoline with 10% ethanol.

True. Though the same might be said for both ethanol AND oil.

Oil companies are mandated to sell blended gas to meet Oxy content and ethanol is the only game going.

I was not aware that oil was the recipient of subsidies.

I am aware that Oil is the frequent target of “Windfall Taxes” by the Left.

Any country that converts food to fuel (especially while actual fuel is plentiful) has set on a course of national starvation.

We've had a glut of food for decades, since the 40's at least.

Our big problem in regard to food production is what to do with all the surplus.

We have mountains of extra feedstuffs.

Corn production has nearly doubled in that last 20 years, and the real serious yield increases are just around the corner, it's almost a forgone conclusion that nearly all types of food production will double in the next twenty years, and in less time if we really want it. Corn could very well double in ten.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike ethanol, but lack of product to fire up the plants isn't one of them.

What do you think should be done with all those extra feedstuffs?

One unexpected side effect of the Ethanol push is that the price of Tequila is going up. Farmers in Central Mexico are switching from growing the Agave plant to corn. Less Agave = less Tequila = higher price. As is typical with most government sponsored initiatives they are short sighted.

Nebraska has had ethanol at the pumps since at least the 80's. I'm not sure how many others had it also.
