He’s pretty much missed the telecasts that he’s done play-by-play as well.

Will he be ready for the next broadcast of “Gumbel to Gumbel?”

“I despise political correctness.”

I despise political correctness as much as anybody, but I also recognize a HUGE difference between political correctness and observing common decency and decorum of never wishing illness or death on someone no matter how despicable they might be. That kind of low-class behavior has nothing to do with political correctness or incorrectness, and is typical of a DU @$$#*!&. Most FReepers are above such comments. That is one of the things that sets us apart from hate sites that often occupy the left side of the political spectrum.

Have a nice day.

No!!!!!!...he is awful.

Much agreed!

The appointment of Gumbel to call play-by-play for NFLN had to be a political move by the left...........as he is one of the absolute worst doing play-by-play in the NFL today..........

Repeatedly using about a dozen tired gridiron action monikers, in a dry, disinterested droning monotone, Gumbel barely qualifies for decent color commentary, much less the action packed venue of play-by-play........he is awful........

Bryant Gumbel...isn’t he the guy whose mother was living on a few hundred dollars a month in Harlem while he was making millions a year?

NFL network has lined up some must see games....Broncos/Texans

While neither team is stellar, they both still have outside shots at the playoffs, so it's nowhere near as pointless as the Niners/Bengals (just cruising until the draft) game.

Gumbel, meanwhile, will rest up for the network's Saturday night game between the Bengals and 49ers. He will work the game with Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk

And will be watching this one with the sound muted!

I hate liberals as much as the rest of youse guys, but Gumbel and Collinsworth are up there with Michaels/Madden, The White Guy Who Also Does Golf/Simms and Enberg/Some Other Dude as the best in the game. I would rank them best over all, but I have a soft spot for Michaels/Madden. I guess it is all in the individual’s preference.

” no matter how despicable they might be. “

Even OJ, Hitler, Eichman, Mengele, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Hugo Chavez, Castro, Mugabe, Idi Amin, Akmanutjob, Kim Il Song a Dingy Dong, Osama, Hillary, Murtha and/or Gore and Kerry?

What would it take for you to wish some one ill? How many people would someone have to kill before you wished them ill?

Remember the Dukakis question?

Have a nice Pollyanna, Little Mary Sunshine kinda day.

Oh gosh, I’ve been found out, I AM a smartass.

Thanks for the lesson in manners.

I’m sure your mother was very wise. After all, she made you so very nice. Did she teach you to hate? I thought hate was wrong. I’m sure that you’re very nice and not very self righteous either.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. Happy New Year.

“Oh gosh, I’ve been found out, I AM a smartass.”

I think VRWCmember took you to task better than I could.
And yet you still dig in.

“Able to alienate most of my friends and strangers with a single acerbic, nasty, ironic, smart ass comment.” - From your profile.

Any further exchange with you is pointless. You seem to be intent on creating your own misery, good luck with that, I wish you much success.

The sports teams are starting to offer things more and more on a pay per view.

There was a time when everything they offered was 'pay per view'. You had to buy a ticket if you wanted to see the game.

Somehow we got the idea we are entitled to their product for free.

“NFL Network”?

In the immortal words of Archie Bunker, “Whoop dee doo!”

If not for the novelty of HDTV, I’d never give a hoot about the National Felons League. As it is, I tune in maybe once every other week, and 5 minutes is generally plenty.

It’s not a matter of preference with Gumbel, he doesn’t know the basic concepts of the game. He’s gotten a little better this year, at least he’s stopped calling punts “turning it over on downs” but he still clearly doesn’t know the rules, and I’m not talking the deep hoodoo rules I’m talking about simple things like 10 yards in 4 downs. Collinsworth can provide useful insight, he annoys the hell out of me because he’s such a glad hander and wuss, but once or twice a game he’ll actually say something worth listening to. But Gumbel is just unforgivably terrible even before you factor in his liberalism and hypocrisy.

Nope. You over-simplify. When I watch something on TV, it’s not free. I subject myself to advertising for the priviledge of watching the game. And back when the model was buy a ticket or don’t see it, going to a game much less expensive.

Professional sports is pricing me out of their game. I don’t go to Browns games unless I’m given tickets free. Too expensive. I don’t go too many Indians games, while they’re more affordable, good seats will still set you back quite a bit.
I’m not whining about an entitlement. I’m stating a fact. If you want your advertisers to have access to me, you have to keep me interested. Move to pay per view, or a subscriber model, and you’ll lose me. Once you lose a fan, you tend to lose their immediate family, thus killing the propogation and tradition of being a fan.
Professional sports is a delicate thing. It’s a business that has to pretend to be something more. We Browns fans learned how business works. I’m well aware. It’s their team, it’s their product, they can package it as they see fit. I can only vote with my dollars.
If I’m not typical, the NFL has nothing to worry about.
If I am typical of most fans, the NFL is running the risk of losing fans, and positioning themselves to lose the tradition. As in: I remember watching the xxxxxs with my dad. I remember how we would do such and such before or after the game.
My oldest son has some recollection of me being an avid Browns fan. My youngest has no such recollection, and is very unlikely to ever be a serious Browns fan.

And a final observation. You might say: “The NFL doesn’t need you, you don’t buy tickets. Not only that, the people who do buy tickets and NFL network, etc. have more money and will support the NFL business.” Well, I do buy other stuff, and have bought Browns gear. If the NFL loses enough average joes, then their product becomes less desirable. There are a significant number of fans who go to games because they are “events”. They like being able to tell others they went to a certain game. A status symbol. If the “joes” don’t pay attention, and don’t care, then the status symbol becomes less desirable.

Yet few teams, including the Browns, ever had sell outs. Until 1974, (around the time ticket prices started going up) even sell outs were blacked out in home markets. .

When I watch something on TV, it’s not free. I subject myself to advertising for the priviledge of watching the game.

On the NFL network, you get just as many commercials as you do on the alphabet networks. I pay nothing extra for the NFL network --- it's part of the basic package on Dish Network.

The fight here is between the NFL and the big cable companies who want to put the NFL Network on their premium packages but not on the basic. The NFL wants it on basic.

If you happen to be one of the few who still only have broadcast TV, you are also missing the ESPN games.
