Who calls television a democracy? I can't walk up and demand my five minutes on Oprah.

Debates are held by their sponsors. The sponsors can invite whomever they choose. If the criteria are bogus, if the debates are "undemocratic," then candidates can choose to decline their invitations.

I'm going to several Christmas parties in the next couple weeks. Each host decided whom to invite. If they invite folks I don't like, or fail to invite folks I do like, then I can opt not to attend. I can ask them to reconsider. But in the end, it's their party (and they'll cry if they want to ... sorry, bit of a tangent there).
