Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet, are registered for home furnishing gifts at Target and Dillard’s department stores as they prepare to leave the Governor’s Mansion in January and move into a house they recently purchased in North Little Rock.

Gifts requested at Dillard’s for Janet and Mike Huckabee include 24 place settings of Lenox “Holiday Nouveau” china and stemware (from $14 to $40 a piece), Biddeford bed linens (king and queen bed skirts from $89 to $99), an oval pot rack ($60), an asparagus pot ($30), a KitchenAid mixer ($300) and a Jack LaLanne power juicer ($100).

The Jack LaLanne juicer is also on the Target list, along with a Kitchen Essentials 12-piece cookware set ($250) and cookie sheet ($20), Fieldcrest bed linens (from $30 to $144), rugs (from $25 to $150), and table linens, potholders and kitchen towels (from $2 to $13) and more.

Target’s registry also notes: “Message from the couple: Target GiftCards are welcome.” They can be purchased in amounts from $10 to $1,000.

Kinda blasphemous to be registered at Target in Walmart-owned Arkansas isn’t it?

Who in hell wants a president who is a failure at managing his money?

Dear Santa Claus, How have you been? Did you have a nice summer? How is your wife? I have been extra good this year, so I have a long list of presents that I want. Please note the size and color of each item, and send as many as possible. If it seems too complicated, make it easy on yourself: just send money. How about tens and twenties?

Not registered at WAL-MART, an Arkansas based store?! Too low-class for Gomer Huckleberry, I suppose (although he did live in a mobile home while governor).

The Huckabees are buying the house at 1134 Silverwood Trail for $ 525, 000, he said.

The nearly 7, 000-squarefoot, tri-level house - built on a 49, 096-square-foot lot, with a swimming pool, a finished basement and five and a half baths - is in the Shady Valley subdivision.

Royalties from the governor's book, Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork, released in May 2005, allowed the Huckabees to make a down payment and get a bank loan to buy a house of that size, he said. The Huckabees are also selling a house they own on Lake Greeson in Pike County, he said.

That's fine, but what is his reaction to this effort? If he says nothing and takes the gifts then he's complicit. When most people leave a job be it on good or bad terms, they don't get appliances, furniture and china. Why should politicians?

We don't need new laws to prevent this kind of "soft" corruption. We need political leaders who bring leadership instead of a sense of entitlement. Thanks for posting this article. Now I know I will not be voting for the Huckster!

Housewarming gifts are very common, as are housewarming registries. Also, Janet Huckabee continues to work while her husband campaigns. I don’t really support the Huck for the Presidency, but I’ve never seen anything wrong with having a registry.

You have to understand, on FR these days, absolutely everything Huckabee has ever said or done is proof positive that he is a lying, two-faced, illegal-immigrant-loving, corrupt, tax-hiking SOCIALIST!!! Including if his friends want to give him and his wife a housewarming party, and Target lists it under "Wedding Registry" because their computer system doesn't have a "Housewarming" category, only Wedding and Baby showers.

Oh and BTW: people seriously think that being registered at freakin' TARGET is proof that he's a greedy graft-grubber like the Clintons? They backed a van up to the White House, and I assure you Hillary didn't fill it with Jack LaLanne juicers. I swear, some people on here are so invested in their fantasies of Duncan Hunter sweeping the nation that they have lost all grip on reality.

The word “no” comes to mind.

By accepting, they said “yes;” and therefore, by accepting, they are very much a part of it.

Nice try.

State ethics laws prohibited the Huckabees from receiving gifts of more than $100 as a reward for doing his job. But there was an exception for “wedding presents.”

THAT is why they did a “wedding” registry.

“Somebody had to give these “hostesses” their selection of things they wanted.”

Exactly!!!

And let’s call it for what it is. It is called “bribery,” and the Huck and the little wife know it.

Should he become president or should he have a future job with influence, favors will be returned.

There is nothing innocent about this.

Okay...'splain these, Loosey:

The commission found Huckabee unintentionally failed to disclose $23,500 he received from a nonprofit organization set up to handle his speaking engagements and supplement his income before he became governor.

The nonprofit, Action America, paid Huckabee a total of $41,500 in 1994 and 1995 but missed IRS filing deadlines for those years. Huckabee has repeatedly declined to disclose the handful of benefactors who financed the group.

Allegations by a former governor’s mansion employee in 1998 became part of the basis for a lawsuit against Huckabee over his family’s use of a $60,000-a-year fund. The lawsuit also dealt with Huckabee’s assertion that $70,000 worth of furniture donated to the governor's mansion was his to keep.

The fund had been used to pay for pizza, a doghouse, a magazine subscription and pantyhose for Huckabee’s wife, Janet, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

The suit was settled with Huckabee admitting no wrongdoing but acknowledging a dispute "regarding reimbursements” and making clear the furniture was for the mansion.

Before leaving office Jan. 9, Huckabee spent $13,000 in state funds to destroy the hard drives of nearly 100 computers in the governor’s office.

He pointed out that he had backed up the data and argued that the hard drive destruction was standard practice to prevent the dissemination of sensitive information related to employees or constituents.

Critics suggested he was hiding something. But the ethics commission dismissed complaints alleging violations of record management rules.

That might not be the end of the story, though. A lawyer is suing Huckabee, alleging that he misspent state money on the destruction.

THAT is why they did a “wedding” registry.

Huckabee supported a bill for covenant marriage in Arkansas. After the law was passed, he and Janet renewed their vows at a public ceremony. A few of their friends decided to celebrate the occasion with a wedding registry. The local liberal weekly rag found out about the registry and tried to make an issue of it.

When will the freepers begin to get behind Duncan Hunter,

The other republican nominees are pretty much out.
Mitt is an ok kinda guy but can we conservatives bet the bank on him.
Fred is in the same camp.
We have a real need for someone like Duncan Hunter because he really does fit the MOLD of Ronald Reagan. The conservative base will come back and out to vote for Duncan Hunter not so sure about the others.
The reason the democrats are holding a power lead today is because the conservatives sit the last election OUT.
The time machine is ticking away and you can believe Hillary will win the nomination of the fruit bats on the left.

Yup. And when the Washington Post brought it up, did he come clean? No, he insisted that the reason for the "wedding registry" is that this is the only kind of registry available at the stores (target and Dillard). This is BS; Target has all kinds of registries.

I know that politicians lie, but it feels different when the person lying is also a preacher.

&&&
This FReeper is solidly behind Hunter.

IMO, the reason that Hunter has been held back is that the establishment GOP, the ones influenced by big money, does not want him to win because 1) his defense of our borders would cut off cheap labor for some companies, and 2) his called for parity in our trade tariffs with China threatens to cut off cheap offshore labor for some companies.

BTW, did you catch the debate today. Our man looked darned good.

Housewarming registries are common? Where? I am almost sixty. I have lived on both coasts and in the Midwest. I have never heard of housewarming registries. This is something new.

I have been to many a housewarming. I have brought a bottle of wine or a meal but I didn’t furnish their kitchen, buy them appliances or bring them big ticket items. When did this become the norm? When you bought your last house, what goodies did you rake in?

I may be out of date but there is something unseemly and a bit unethical about a politician getting gifts simply because he moving out of government housing.
