Will Faith Play Role For Huckabee In New Hampshire?
WMUR New Hampshire ^ | 12/13/2007

Mike Huckabee has surged into first place in the Iowa Republican caucus, but he often finds himself answering questions about his faith and about God.

Social conservatives and evangelicals are coming together to support Huckabee. The candidate has been criticized for some of his comments on faith and rival Mitt Romney, asking in a New York Times interview, "Don't Mormons believe Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Huckabee has apologized to Mitt Romney, and in a Good Morning America interview, the candidate said he doesn't want be seen as pitting candidates' religions against each other. He said he would discuss only his own beliefs.

"If I don't answer the question, I'm evasive," he said. "If I do answer it, I'm attacking someone. I'll be happy to discuss what I believe."

But in WMUR's Candidate Cafe series that aired this week, Huckabee was asked about how faith and politics blend.

"I always cringe a bit when I hear candidates tell you their faith has no effect at all, (that they will) keep that completely separate," Huckabee said. "That says their faith is so shallow that it doesn't have a significant impact on his or her life."

All of the major candidates have been asked about their faith. John McCain said he considers it a private matter, Ron Paul said it's important but in a nondescript way, and Romney said his faith is based on the same principles of family as other religions.

Political professor Paul Manuel of St. Anselm College said the focus on Huckabee's faith could help him in Bible Belt states such as Iowa, but New Hampshire voters are different.

"They want a person to be devout and a good citizen, but they don't want candidates wearing it on their sleeves," Manue said. "They consider it more of a private matter."

Polls have consistently shown there are far fewer self-described religious conservative voters in New Hampshire than are found in Iowa, where Huckabee is leading among Republicans.

Hey Dane, I hope they're paying you overtime down at Huckster HQ!

Congrats babe, you are the all time champion of political pimp-posting!

In fact, I think that you, on your own, (well, counting all your screen names) have posted more Huckster PR, than the Ron Paulites ever did together!

Are you calling for a Huckabee-Paul ticket?

Of course not, I’m merely noting Dane/Dano1’s amazingly fecund posting habits. All by herself, she posts more Huckster tripe than a troop of Paulites ever did.

Given that he’s an open border liberal, I don’t think your amnesty supporter is going anywhere.

You're going to have to seek serious help if Mike doesn't get on the ticket.
