Romney, Thompson Body Slam Huckabee
CBN News ^ | December 14, 2007 | David Brody

Posted on 12/14/2007 9:17:46 AM PST by lesser_satan

Here's the new wrestling duo. It's Mitt and Fred. They are a team and their opponent is Mike Huckabee. Before we go on, click here to see what Mitt and Fred look like all dressed up in their wrestling outfits.

Both campaigns trashed Huckabee in emails sent out to reporters. I guess "Iowa nice" only applies to candidates at rallies inside the state. Cyberspace is a different ballgame.

The Romney campaign blasted Huckabee on illegal immigration and read below from the Thompson campaign. This is what they are putting out about Huckabee.

In light of Mike Huckabee's heartfelt apology to Mitt Romney for making reference to Romney's religion in the New York Times Magazine, we at the Thompson Campaign would like to offer Huckabee our own heartfelt apologies for some references we've made about his record as Governor of Arkansas.

We apologize for pointing out that as Governor of Arkansas, Huckabee offered in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. That's something he'd probably just as soon no one talk about.

We apologize for pointing out that in 2002 Huckabee wrote Pres. Bush a letter asking him to lift the Cuban embargo. It's easy to see how Huckabee might have missed the finer points of a 40-year embargo. While he obviously knew enough about the embargo to ask that it be lifted, Huckabee clearly didn't know enough to ask that it not be lifted. So for that, we're sorry.

We apologize for referencing that 47% tax increase Huckabee imposed on Arkansas taxpayers when he was governor. That must be really awkward for him, now that he's running in a GOP primary election. We notice he never points it out to voters.

We apologize for telling reporters that a BA in Biblical Studies from Ouachita Baptist University doesn't, in fact, make Huckabee more qualified to fight the war on terror than say.Fred Thompson.

Actually, kudos to the Thompson campaign for creativity on the email. Here's the problem for Huckabee. Thompson and Romney have big staffs with lots of "oppo research" staffers. Huckabee does not. He relies on free air time and that's why you see him on the cable shows all the time. You can argue that it's not a fair fight but hey, this is the rough and tumble world of politics. If Huckabee wants to become the nominee, he's going to need to start being way more aggressive in combating these attacks through email and surrogates. He does push back on some of this but one email blast a day compared to multiple ones a day coming from the other campaigns is tough for Huckabee's folks. His campaign team is very competent. That's not the issue. The issue is that right now they are outmanned and outgunned. How and when will that change?

“Huckabee being exposed as the worst RINO in the race.”

The worst RINO in our party. SCHIP alone puts him with the RAT socialists.

Glenn Beck (certainly not unbiased, as he favors either Rudy or Mitt), nevertheless had data that only 25% of non-evangelicals in IA and NH would consider voting for Huck. That works out to a Dukakis/Mondale level loss.

They don’t appear to be trashing Governor Huckabee nearly as much as his record. They only trash him for lying and trying to hide it. At least, that’s how it appears.

Glenn Beck is a member of the LDS. Or at least claims it as his religion. I like GB, but it seems his support is for one of his brethren rather than conservatism. This as well as his support of Rooty tooty fresh and fruity, baffle me.

I agree completely. Nobody has gone after him personally.

Well, it shouldn't baffle you. I'm a lifetime 98%er on the American Conservative Union scale, but I think Rudy is the single best guy for fighting the WoT, and that's issue #1 for me. Unless I see that Fred can actually get some traction in polls versus Hillary I will vote for the most conservative candidate who has a reasonable shot at winning, and right now, that's Rudy.

Really? Why do you say so? (Serious question here.)

I know Giuliani is somehow perceived to be the big WoT guy, but why? He has no foreign policy experience, and his record on terrorism leads me to think of him as a "first responder" type -- at best -- rather than a "go out and kill them before they can attack us" guy.

The worst RINO in our party.

I think the competitions is tougher than you think. He has to beat out Arlan Specter, Arnold, Rudy, McCain and Mitt. That's one tough RINO pageant.

The last round of polls done before S-USA dropped Thompson and some of the other polls have show Thompson ahead of Hillary, in some places by a wider margin than Rudy. Of course, they also show McCain as doing the best against her.

If Rudy is an expert on terrorism because of 9-11, Ray Nagin is an expert on hurricanes and RT Rybak is an expert on bridge failure.

By God, I hope so. I hope some of these churches wake up and see him for what he is.

I'm actually glad to see Thompson and Romney working together. They would make a decent team in either order.

This link gives a fairly decent rundown of all candidates on immigration issues.

The Huckster makes some nice statements, but has a horrible record. When you look at the actual records, Tancredo and Hunter are the only ones with sterling performance, but Mitt and Fred are clearly the only ones any good among the first tier of candidates (double-digit poll numbers or better).

The best scenario might be for Fred to declare he will only serve one term with Mitt in the second spot to shore up his conservative bonafides and provide economic leadership, which is Mitt's strong area.

I really like Fred's "What you see is what you get" style, but am concerned that he might not be able to attract sufficient votes from the mushy middle because he doesn't campaign 24/7 or have great hair. Romney would compliment him on both accounts.

The issue is that right now [Huckabee's campaign is] outmanned and outgunned. How and when will that change?

Actually, the issue is that Huckabee is a single-issue conservative who has no business leading the Republican Party, much less the country.

No liberal can be trusted to do whats right. Rooty was a draft dodger during Vietnam and his closest encounter with terrorism came about when the WTC was destroyed on 9-11. I'd say those are two huge strikes against Giuliani.

I can not beleive the obsession some people have with the candidate’s hair, as my Dad always said, G_d made a few perfect heads, the rest he covered with hair
