You can be a good welder or a good grinder. I’m a good grinder.

Bag in my Sub days, we used to always take the welders to sea with us for sea trials after any major welding job.

Not sure this info should be made public. Makes me a bit uncomfortable.

Wasn’t there a sub not long ago that ran into an underwater mountain and the Navy’s plans were to cut off the nose, and weld a new one into its place?

I think I’d have second thoughts about that around now.

I have a tenant (cerbaco) that makes ceramic backing plates used in ship welding of the plate seams. The Guy has a patent on the process. He lost a large contract to the Chicoms. They copied his patent and undercut him on large contracts.

Watcha wanna bet!

Just a guess but I'll bet it's because they don't use the old stick welder anymore but rather they use wire welders and they aren't getting penetration....but the welds look prettier.

Or maybe it's below standard Chinese steel.

As an aside, one of my roommates from college interned with GD... was a mech. engineer. One of his tasks was to inspect welds on the electric boat he was assigned. Would tell me that at certain times of the day they had to cover up portions of the yard because they knew when the Ruskie’s satellites were passing over.
