Congress last night passed a giant new spending bill that undermines current plans for a U.S.-Mexico border fence, allowing the Homeland Security Department to build a single-tier barrier rather than the two-tier version that has worked in California. The spending bill, written by Democrats and passed 253-154 with mostly their votes, surrenders to President Bush's budget demands, meeting his spending limit...
The concessions promise to end a months-long budget standoff before Congress adjourns for the year and takes a Christmas break scheduled to start Friday....But the measures did not pass before House Republicans blasted the changes to the border fence.
"The fact that this was buried in a bloated, 3,500-page omnibus speaks volumes about the Democrats' unserious approach on border security and illegal immigration," said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner..."Gutting the Secure Fence Act will make our borders less secure, but it's consistent with the pattern of behavior we've seen all year from this majority..."
The 2006 Secure Fence Act specifically called for "two layers of reinforced fencing" and listed five specific sections of border where it should be installed. The new spending bill removes the two-tier requirement and the list of locations....Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas Republican who has led the charge to change the 2006 law, said she wants to give Homeland Security more flexibility and wants local officials and landowners to be consulted...But Rep. Peter T. King, who sponsored the Secure Fence Act, said if the goal was to give DHS flexibility, the senators have failed.
"This is either a blatant oversight or a deliberate attempt to disregard the border security of our country," the New York Republican said. "As it's currently written, the omnibus language guts the Secure Fence Act almost entirely. Quite simply, it is unacceptable."...

All she's after is the money of the "middle class"....yours and mine...which "after taxes" will leave equal to the lower class.....except we have to work.
There’s a bill to build a fence? Humph, last time I talked to Jorge, he didn’t know a thing about it.
Texas Republicans, please note that Kay Baily Hutchison (R-TX) was the one who led the charge to change the 2006 requirement for a two-tiered fence. And this woman wants to become Governor of Texas. Fat chance, Kay. You didn’t see John Cornyn back this Dem plan.
You can say that again
Wouldn’t you know - no reduction in the redundant social giveaway programs,
but a legitimate federal issue, border security, gets the cut.
At least if she runs for Governor we will get her sorry ass out the senate.
ping
The only good thing about this is that it’s a tailor-made soundbite for political ads. “So and so voted to dismantle the border fence” will end several political careers in 2008.
She won’t get my vote, that’s for sure !
It was a voice vote in the Senate. No records for the taxpayers to see.
Dump all of them in the toilet and flush twice.
>>You didnt see John Cornyn back this Dem plan.<<
Actually, Cornyn co-sponsored the KBH amendment in the senate.
Not true.
As WND reported last week, an amendment submitted by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, and co-sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for the Department of Homeland Security 2008 budget was aimed at gutting the already-approved Secure Fence Act, which was adopted with the promise hundreds of miles of physical fencing would help secure the U.S. border with Mexico.

Traitors everywhere. Who can be trusted?
DUNCAN HUNTER or TOM TANCREDO. A vote for any other will continue the invasion and end up in amnesty.
