Cal Thomas: The right to stop killers
Sacramento Bee ^ | 12/18/7 | Cal Thomas

I have been waiting for this to happen. For years we have witnessed the carnage when innocents were mowed down at schools, colleges, shopping malls and post offices. The unarmed (disarmed?) were easy targets for crazed gunmen armed with grievances and weapons.

Now someone has shot back, probably saving many lives. All of the gun-control laws that have been passed and are still being contemplated could not have had the affect of one armed, trained and law-abiding citizen on the scene like 42-year-old Jeanne Assam, a volunteer security guard at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

The gunman, 24-year-old Mathew Murray, had been expelled from the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) organization for health reasons, according to officials. Authorities say Murray vowed revenge in several Web postings, which copied abundantly from the manifesto written by Columbine High School killer Eric Harris before the 1999 school massacre.

In rants laced with profanity, Murray lashed out against Christians he said had "brought this on yourselves." He wrote that Christians "are to blame for most of the problems in the world." Does that qualify as a "hate crime"? Probably not as such designations are usually given only to "oppressed minorities."

It is Assam and not the shooter who received – and deserves – most of the media attention and praise. Calm and collected at a news conference, Assam detailed her movements and decision-making after hearing shots in the parking lot outside the church. She was especially attentive to possible danger after learning of the earlier shooting during which two people were killed at the YWAM facility several miles away.

After hearing shots in the church parking lot, Assam said she walked about 100 yards through a hallway, hid herself and when Murray walked in, emerged from hiding and confronted him

Funny, I did not see a single mention of ducks in this entire article. Cal Thomas talks a lot about guns, but doesn’t mention ducks at all...

this part: The point is that gun laws will not deter criminals with evil intent and police can't be everywhere they're needed. But killers can be stopped by law-abiding citizens with guns. As the Supreme Court considers its ruling on whether the strict gun laws in the District of Columbia are constitutional, it might remember Jeanne Assam and her courageous, proper and for now legal response to a lawless act. Though four were killed at the two locations and several others wounded, many more owe their lives to Assam, who should be the new poster woman for those who wish to preserve the right to keep and bear arms.

was the MOST important part of all.

Cal Thomas hit a home run with this column!

I suspect the MSM is now in ‘ignore it mode’ now that they’ve been unable to find anything to make this hero look like a gun nut.

Thank you for posting this article.

Merry Christmas to you, friends, and family!

What I’ve read of it so far, it is the most straightforward article I have seen written so far.

The media, though, has been so busy milking the prize cow, that they ignore everything else.

He shot and killed people at the YWAM (sp?).
He shot and killed a 16 and an 18 year old girl, and wounded the father, in the parking lot.

DOES ANYONE EVEN KNOW THEIR NAMES?

Duck if someone is taking aim at you, preferably behind something solid, until you can aim your own gun.

Don't bother to duck after the shot is fired because regardless of what you may have seen in old western movies, you can't duck a bullet that's already been fired.

Another good piece on this by David Reinhard.

Praise the Lord . . . and the armed security guard

Not meaning to hijack the thread... but it amazes me how Cal Thomas could posess a degree of common sense on one issue (personal protection)and yet be so far off base on another issue of (personal and national)protection.

Cal Thomas should use the same logic regarding our borders. More Americans have been killed by illegals here in the CONUS since 1990 than were killed in the first Gulf War, the Iraq War and the current dust-up in trash-can-istan. But alas... he’s an illegal apologist.

While reading this, I just cut out for a few minutes to send my son a Christmas gift... we have a new NRA member.

For all you members of the NRA, {and if you are not, you should join} please send the gift of an NRA membership for Christmas.

It will be a welcome Christmas gift, and it will have a positive influence on the results of the election in 2008.

Nor the effect.

It’s good that some columnists are keeping the real point of the story alive. The MSM has done everything in its power to bury it. First, they tried to get the woman identified as a “security guard” rather than a private citizen with a carry permit who volunteered to carry while attending her own church. Then they tried to spin her as some kind of crooked cop, because she got fired ten years ago for yelling at a bus driver and lying about it. When that didn’t stick, they jumped all over the idea that the gunman shot himself to avoid discussion of the fact that shooting himself immediately upon entering the church probably wasn’t his plan before he was shot multiple times by Ms. Assam (strangely, the reports say he shot himself with a shotgun, and yet he was carrying a rifle and two pistols - no one ever mentioned a shotgun before). Now it appears the media is going to pretend that none of it ever happened. Too bad for them some of us know the truth and won’t forget it.

"The MSM has done everything in its power to bury it."

I don't know if Cal Thomas has the independence of a Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter, but if he is employed by an organization, I fully expect HIM to be buried. The MSM ain't happy when someone goes off the ranch, so to speak.
