Pinocchios for Huckabee on Illegal Immigrants
Washington Post ^ | December 18, 2007

(snip)

One leading rival, Fred Thompson, has accused Huckabee of having "championed" an effort to permit illegal immigrants to benefit from in-state tuition rates at state universities. Huckabee has denied the charge, claiming that his support was limited to a much more restrictive scholarship program.

Huckabee's denials fly in the face of the record.

The Facts

During his annual "State of the State address" to the Arkansas state legislature in January 2005, Huckabee proposed making "any student graduating from a high school in Arkansas" eligible for state financial aid. He said it was "terribly unjust" to deny such aid solely on the basis of the student's immigration status, "a status that he had no decision in and no control over."

(snip)

Huckabee defended the bill in conversations with reporters, and expressed disappointment when the measure failed to pass the Arkansas Senate by just two votes. "I don't understand the opposition to it, I just honestly don't," Huckabee said, according to an April 14, 2005 Associated Press report. "It hurts me on a personal as well as a policy level to think that we are still debating issues that I kind of hoped we had put aside in the 1960s."

(snip)

The Pinocchio Test

The distinction that Huckabee is attempting to draw is an artificial one. His original State of the State address talked about making all Arkansas high school graduates eligible for state "financial aid," not just A-plus students applying for citizenship. It is true that Huckabee was particularly interested in the scholarship part of the bill. But it is untrue to claim that he "did not support in-state tuition" for illegal immigrants.

"In Arkansas, Governor Huckabee supported broadening a particular merit scholarship -- not in-state tuition - to include high-achieving children who were applying for citizenship...The proposal to make children of illegal immigrants eligible for in-state tuition was not part of the Governor's plan." ---Huckabee press release, www.mikehuckabee.com, December 15, 2007.

Huckabee is a complete fraud.

The REAL Mike Huckabee

California is way ahead of him. Maybe Arnold gave Mike the idea.

Regardless of immigration status &/or whether you are in immigration processing, immigrant students now have an opportunity to access higher education! Under the new law, undocumented youth will be treated as “residents” for the purposes of tuition at California’s public colleges at California State Universities (for example: Cal State L.A., Cal State Northridge, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Dominguez Hills, etc.) and Community Colleges (for example: Santa Monica College, East Los Angeles Community College, Los Angeles Community College, etc.) providing they meet the following criteria:

High school attendance in California for 3 or more years;
Graduation from a California high school (or passed the GED);
Registration as an entering student, or current enrollment, at an accredited college or university on or after Fall 2001-02 academic year;
Filing an affidavit (more clarity about this implementation will come shortly; however, we know that filing the affidavit will take place at the school you apply to) stating the student has filed, or will file, an application to legalize her or his immigration status as soon as she or he is eligible to do so.

The difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition is significant. Immigrant youth will now have the opportunity to realize their educational dreams!

California Community Colleges $11/unit (in-state) $130/unit (out-of-state)

California State University $1,839 (in-state) $7,380 (out-of-state)

*University of California $2,716 (in-state) $10,244 (out-of-state)

*Efforts are underway to ensure that the UC Board of Regents also comply with this law.

The worst part is that the idiots governing in other states always want to inflict CA’s idiocy on the rest of us just to follow a fad.

See if you contine to think Huckabee is “unsinkable” after watching these short youtube videos. I know for certain, that Huckabee’s polls will reflect the common sense moral voters mindset on these matters, once the Voters become Widely AWARE of Mike Huckabee’s real record as the man he “chose” to be as governor of Arkansas.

In 1912 the Titanic was hailed as unsinkable, it sank on its first voyage, and today, a great number of folks are saying Mike Huckabee is unsinkable. The comparison should be obvious to even the most casual observer.

I wish FReepers would listen to us Arkansas conservatives that know him best when we say that Huckster the Snake Oil Saleman will make Bush’s compassionate conservatism look like Scrooge by comparison....especially when it comes to catering to the illegal alien invasion.

I am listening to you and I have thought he was a snake-oil salesman from the first. I think he is a squish in GOP clothing.
