Small town Police Officer shot dead responding to a domestic dispute.

Tell us again that being a cop is less dangerous than being a retail clerk.

Eh. I'd rather be a Smithsburg cop than a clerk at a Smithsburg convenience store. At least as a cop you're allowed to be armed. Neither job is particularly safe, but that's what cops sign up for. The same really can't be said of the retail clerk.

Md. Governor O’Malley (D) said his hope is that Md. can be the next state to repeal the death penalty, after NJ. No one has been put to death since Gov. Erlich (R)was in office. I long for the good old days!! Erlich may run again next time. He has a call in radio show and people, mostly city blacks call and say they just voted for O’Malley to send Bush a message about Iraq. What does a Governor have to do with Iraq? They don’t like Iraq so they voted to raise my taxes and to let murderers live life! What a state!!

Why do you think he was joking? I'd like to see the murderer fry, too.

Not so much chance of that in 'Western' Maryland.

June 2004

Maryland executes Steven Oken after US Supreme Court lifts last-minute stay of execution imposed and upheld by Federal District and Circuit Courts, respectively, and Governor Ehrlich refuses clemency,

It was the one and only, the courts halt all others.

I have lived in the Smithsburg area my whole life and not only does my family know the police officer I personally know the suspect and have for MANY years. There is obvious wrong doing on the suspects behalf and I believe that he does need punishment however you REALLY see tragic situations different when it PERSONALLY affects you. My thoughts are with all parties involved......not only the victims family but the suspects family also!!!

Hmm . . . Let's go back to that previous thread and see what I actually said there . . .

For anyone who isn’t familiar with northern New Jersey, Rutherford isn’t exactly a sprawling metropolis. A police officer in that town has a job that is no more dangerous than that of a typical retail clerk.

Now let's go and do some research on the subject using Bureau of Labor statistics for 2006. According to Table A-5 (Fatal Occupational Injuries by Occupation and Event/Exposure), there were 130 deaths among law enforcement personnel last year -- including 110 police officers (the rest were court officers, wardens, criminal investogators, etc.).

During the same time period there were 78 deaths among food service workers and 308 among sales/service workers.
