NEW YORK Earlier this week the Chicago Tribune announced it was hiking its street price from 50 cents to 75 cents. Now The Washington Post reveals that it will raise its newsstand price from 35 cents to 50 cents beginning with editions of Dec. 31.

An article in the Post explains that it is "responding to the paper's decline in circulation and advertising revenue.

Home delivery price for The Post and the Sunday newsstand price will not change.

The previous newsstand price increase came in 2001.

"For a decade, the median daily price for U.S. newspapers has been 50 cents, according to the Newspaper Association of America," the Post article observes. "According to the group's 2005 statistics, 81 percent of papers charged 50 cents per daily copy, with 6 percent charging 35 cents. In the past two years, a few newspapers have raised their single-copy price from 50 cents to 75 cents."

I haven’t seen a street vendor selling newspapers in many years. Boxes where I live.

I cannot remember when I bought a loose newspaper in this country.

I subscribe to a couple, gotta get my marching orders from the WSJ and Manchester Union Leader, but otherwise rarely hold one in my hand.

A year ago I was in Guatemala for a month and would buy a copy of the national paper, La Prensa, from the lady on the corner every morning, go into the coffee place, sit at the bar and read the news.

I don't think I've bought a paper since.

I was thinking DC metro area, NYC etc. They’re everywhere. I was in Manhattan last year for a week and they were selling papers and magazines on every block.

That is the answer that Static analysis will always give you. I can do whatever I want to whatever I want and nothing else will be affected; it’s been the Left’s tax policy forever and it has never failed to ...well fail.

The Washington Times has a different purpose. You have Korean ownership.

The Washington Post doesn't really have ownership ~ it has a moonbat with a lot of money.

NYC has the Mob to protect their interests; DC doesn’t. It’s just boxes around here unless you’re at a Metro stop.

Actually, 50 cents for a copy of the Washington Post is a bargain considering that most newspapers in the country already charge 50 cents for a copy of the newspaper for some years.

Shouldn’t they charge by the “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” rule? People with lower incomes - and this would presumptively include women, minorities, illegal aliens, persons of color, children, and the elderly - would get the paper free or for minimal cost...while white males would pay not less than $1, and up to $5, depending on the newsvendor’s assessment of their prosperity based on demeanor and sartorial elegance.

"Another sign that the MSM doesn’t understand market economics. When the demand for your product is dropping, it is usually not a good idea to raise prices."

I'm surprised that the marketing geniuses at the WaPo didn't raise the price to 3.95. "Gosh, we'll make millions of dollars!"

Haven’t purchased a single copy since they gave Jim Webb what amounts to several million dollars in free ad space via the cover of their paper and the sinking of the George Allen campaign in ‘06.
