Canadian military donates old C7 rifles to Afghan National Army

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The Canadian military has agreed to donate 2,500 surplus C7 rifles to the Afghan National Army along with ammunition and training.

The decision, made quietly last week, is expected to bring the fledgling Afghan force in line with other NATO countries.

Building capacity among the ANA is the key to Canada's exit strategy from Afghanistan.

Last month a senior Afghan commander told The Canadian Press that better weaponry was crucial to the buildup of the ANA.

Lt.-Col. Shirin Shah Kowbandi said the army's old Soviet-era AK-47s frequently misfire.

At the time he said Canadians had promised to provide the ANA with "good weapons" but that they had not yet delivered.

The C7 is a close cousin of the US M16A2, both having been developed in parallel from the M16A1,

The weapon is also used by the Brit SAS and SBS.

Maybe the M16 variants will catch up to the AK 47 clones’ worldwide distribution eventually. Nah. But could ya send one my way anyhow? Please?

C7A1 ASSAULT RIFLE

The C7A1 assault rifle is a soldier's best friend. It is the personal weapon for most soldiers both in Canada and on operational missions around the world. The weapon is a Canadian adaptation of the U.S. firearm known as the M16. It is capable of being equipped with a grenadE launcher, laser pointer, and a night vision sight.

Canadian military donates old C7 rifles to Afghan

I'll have to see if my Canadian relatives are handing out
C7's to American cousins as well for Christmas!

"Lt.-Col. Shirin Shah Kowbandi said the army's old Soviet-era AK-47s frequently misfire."

No way! All the poodle-shooter foes claim the AK can be thrown into a mud hole, run over by a tank, and still fire flawlessly.

Maybe his troops like to hear the damn things go rat-a-tat-tat and forget to take the finger off the trigger.

Especially if they are Warsaw Pact surplus weapons.

It seems to me that after years of poor maintenance or no maintenance, even an AK-47 will misfire.

They don't have to send them all the way to Afghanistan. Kentucky is a lot closer.

Heck, I'll even drive up and pick them up myself to save them the shipping costs. ;-)

Oh GREAT! Another fantastic idea.../sarc

In 2003, we issued the ANA 24 Toyota LandCruiser 94's fitted out as field ambulances. They promptly disappeared. When they were "found" a couple of weeks later, we had discovered that the ANA had installed dark tinted windows and all kinds of sound systems. The medical equipment had been stripped out of them. They were basically transformed into pimp-mobiles.

One had been totally wrecked and hidden between two buildings.

Giving these people anything is a mistake. They have no concept of accountability.
