We have some 1.2 to 2 trillion barrels of crude locked up in the midwest in oil shale. That is over 4 times the proven reserves of Saudi Arabia. It's time we stopped heeding the luddite far left envirocatastrophycrats and continue using what we have. Our focus should be to develop a cheap and efficient way to extract the oil from the shale. The shale is on government (OUR) property and the US based oil companies who can extract it should be paid a fair stipend for extraction.
Our greatest strength is US ingenuity. To solve the long-term need to replace fossil fuels, the government should offer a reward of $100 billion - tax free, to the first person or consortium which develops a demonstrable new energy source. Such a reward would short circuit the usually inefficient government grant and research process.

What would be involved in shale oil extraction? Do we have the technology for that?

I like the idea of eliminating the House of Saud....While we’re at it we could level Mecca and Medina.

We are going to have to put up with being blackmailed by Hugo and the Arabs until congress approves a program to develop an oil supply system. Be it shale oil or from under the oceans. As long as we have to rely on someone else for oil we will remain a victims of extortionists.
