I’m Happy To Live In A Christian Nation @ ExileStreet

Usually, when people say they’re not religious, they’re looking to pick a fight or at least start an argument. That’s probably because people who identify themselves as atheists or agnostics are often as dogmatic as Cotton Mather and have merely made a religion of their own non-belief.

In my case, however, religion simply plays no role in my life. Or perhaps I should say institutionalized religion, seeing as how I very much subscribe to the Judeo-Christian value system. It’s the reason that I’m so grateful that two sets of Russian Jewish grandparents had the guts to pack up their kids and caboodle, and move to America. [more @ExileStreet]

He very much subscribes to these Judeo-Christian values?

Isaiah 58 (New American Standard Bible)

1" Cry loudly, do not hold back; Raise your voice like a trumpet, And declare to My people their transgression And to the house of Jacob their sins. 2"Yet they seek Me day by day and delight to know My ways, As a nation that has done righteousness And has not forsaken the ordinance of their God They ask Me for just decisions, They delight in the nearness of God.

Hebrews 10:23

23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

“So, although I do not accept that we are all fallen creatures or that Jesus Christ died for my sins, I am thankful that I live in a Christian nation.”

How can someone, who seems thoughtful and wise in many ways, not believe? If Christ did not die for our sins, then why would he allow himself to be treated as a criminal?

If Christ did not die for our sins, and rise again, why did the Apostle Paul change from persecuting Christians to being persecuted as a Christian? (See Acts 9)

I’m proud to be an American because it allows the greatest freedom in the world. Without freedom there is no Christianity. Without Christ there is no true freedom. God allows us to make our own mistakes, and then forgives us if we change our ways. That is freedom.

So, even though I haven’t a religious bone in my body, I have every reason to be grateful I was born in a country in which it’s Christ’s birthday, and not Muhammad’s first slaying of an infidel, that’s celebrated as a national holiday.

The author appears to be grateful to live in a country where many of his neighbors profess a Christian faith and he is free to reject that faith and still live at peace. As one of his distant neighbors who professes faith in Christ, I am thankful that I can freely practice my faith and live happily alongside those who profess other faiths or none at all. This Protestant Christian is glad to have a delightful Catholic woman as a neighbor on one side and a wonderful Hindu family as neighbors on the other side.
