“You’re a pathetic bigot and an embarrasment to the Free Republic.”

“Romney is running for the Presidency of the United States, not Pope, not Grand Pooba of the Southern Baptist Convention.”

First, there is no “Grand Pooba of the SBC”, which is a thing I’m glad you brought up. There is NO central control in that denomination. That is why you see many different conservatives in the SBC back different folks - not just Huckabee.

However, Mike Huckabee (right or wrong) has made it clear he is running as a “Christian leader” but not to dominate the nation with his personal beliefs. However, he is clear that they WILL influence him. Romney has attempted to distance himself from his, but that dog won’t hunt. No true mormon could do that, and I believe he really is a true mormon.

Besides there is plenty of material out there to indicate he “consults” the high dudes regularly and they have supported him. An example from 2006:
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2006/10/19/romney_camp_consulted_with_mormon_leaders/

an excerpt:

“Over the past two months, Romney’s political operatives and church leaders have discussed building a grass-roots political organization using alumni chapters of Brigham Young University’s business school around the country. More recently, representatives of BYU, which is run by the church, and Romney’s political action committee have begun soliciting help from prominent Mormons, including a well-known author suggested by the governor, to build the program, which Romney advisers dubbed Mutual Values and Priorities, or MVP.”

“The president and prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gordon B. Hinckley, has been made aware of the effort and expressed no opposition, the documents show, and at least one other top church official has played a more active role.”

“Church officials and Romney advisers downplayed the discussions. Church officials say they have a position of strict neutrality on political matters and are not supporting Romney’s candidacy.”

“But documents indicate that Jeffrey R. Holland, one of 12 apostles who help lead the church worldwide, has handled the initiative for the Mormons and that he hosted a Sept. 19 meeting about it in his church office in Salt Lake City with Josh Romney, one of the governor’s sons; Don Stirling, a paid consultant for the Commonwealth PAC, Romney’s political action committee; and Kem Gardner, a prominent Salt Lake City developer who is one of Romney’s biggest donors. Globe reporters observed Romney’s representatives enter and leave chuch headquarters for the meeting.”

Whatever, whether you think I believe in a flat earth or not, is irrelevant. You are being obtuse if you don’t grasp that LDS officials in Salt Lake City will exert an influence over a Romney presidency.

If that makes me a bigot in your eyes, then I can live with that. For I’m just warning you.

Your paranoia would be comical if it were not so depressing. Christians bashing Mormons is not my idea of improving the country. You are locked into your own little conspiratorial universe and I'm confident you are immune to logical and rational thought on this subject. Ergo I won't waste your time and my time.

Merry Christmas.

So you think that Romney should accept no help from any members of his church? That would be the height of stupidity for him, and one thing is isn’t is stupid. The mormon way of life frequently leads to significant prosperity, and he must tap that to win.

Second, do you really think that he is a kool-aid mormon? If so, why did he promise to govern the people of Massachusetts according to their moral values (ie, to not mess with their precious abortion rights)? He followed through with that one. You are either ill-informed or malicious, and I lean towards the former.

On another topic - check out the negative correlation between McCain and Fred. What’s with that? Why would Fred people go back to McCain? (I guess there’s no place else to go, sadly)

Tim Russert to Mitt Romney:
This is from November of ‘05, and it says, quote, “Romney sought advice from the man he admires most in this world, Mormon President Gordon Bitner Hinckley. The conversation eventually turned to whether a run for the presidency would be good for him and the church. The specifics of the conversation are, of course, known only to people who were there.”
