CRESTON, Iowa - Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson on Wednesday teased Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying "there is no woman on the horizon that ought to be president next year."
The former Tennessee senator was challenging potential caucus-goers to choose the best man to help fend off what he described as an assault by a Democratic Party that is "just salivating" to lead the country into a welfare state.
"Who are we going to set on the road — what man are we going to set on the road — to lead us and to stand against this assault?" he asked, emphasizing the word 'man.' He couched his comments by saying "I say the word man advisedly. Now I've got a daughter that's going to be president some day, I know it, and I am all for a woman president, just not this year, not next year."
Without saying Clinton's name, he added: "There is no woman on the horizon that ought to be president next year, let's all agree on that."
Thompson continued to refer to the next president as a man who should represent conservative principles and values, and should be examined "by what he believes and by where he's been and what he's done."
Thompson told the small crowd at a southwestern Iowa restaurant that his record shows he's ready to be that man. He said that if elected, he would implement a flat income tax, save Social Security from bankruptcy, rebuild the military and stop illegal immigration.
When asked to expound on his views on abortion rights, Thompson used a football analogy to explain why instead of a push for a federal ban there is a fight to put the decision in the hands of the states.
"We're on the 10-yard line, and it's like if we can't score a touchdown on our own 10-yard line ... we won't run a play that will take us to the other guy's 20-yard line," he said." I'm talking about doing something that can get done."
After that, Thompson said "we can collect our marbles and see where we are then."
"It wouldn't be a 100 percent solution to everything, but it would be on the right track," he added.
Fresh off of a Christmas break, Thompson joked about taking advantage of too much holiday bounty. Tugging on his black leather jacket, he said "I found that when I got my campaign clothes back on, that somebody shrunk my jacket ... I don't know who washed it behind my back, but somebody apparently did."

Well, the Associated Press is currently running one of the sillier features of the current presidential campaign — “dumb personal questions of the day.” And having seen three of the questions so far, I’d have to say that Fred Thompson is demonstrating the most presidential wit.
Thompson’s attitude seems to be “this is stupid, and I’m not going to treat it seriously. Instead, I’m going to simply give answers that take the crap you people have flung at me and give it right back to you — in one or two words.”
The first question was “what was your childhood nickname?” Fred’s answer? “Mr. President.”
The second one was “what is your most prized personal possession?” “Trophy wife.”
As soon as I saw the third question, I knew the answer. “What do you like to do on a lazy day?” I said “run for president,” but that was too wordy. Thompson cropped it down to “campaigning.”
The hits on Thompson have been that he got a late start, he’s lazy, and he has a trophy wife. Here he’s taken each of them and tossed them right back in the face of the AP.

I am undecided. I have not seen a candidate that I like. Too many of them are RINOs and/or have the wrong answers on the illegal alien issue, which I think is THE issue of the campaign. Fred seems too arrogant to me. I am horrified at the democratic field and think that there MUST be better republicans out there to support us.
Yes, I am aware. He was being ironic and making fun of the process and the lamestream media. But at the same time he demeaned his wife. I can’t respect that. He has an attitude problem. As a voter, I want to know what a candidate’s values are. Who they are as people. We see their records, we see the face they want to show, but what is beneath the surface? He is not a person I would trust. He may be witty, he may say things I like to hear, but he does not treat people with respect and so I can not trust him.
There are many things about Hildebeast that I can’t stand, but the worst part to me is how she treats those who help her (staffers) and protect her (secret service). Even without all her crimes, I would not trust her on that alone.
Have you actually watched any of Fred when he's dealing with regular folk? He's actually a pretty humble guy, but when he's taking on opponents, he's shoots straight.
Personally, I don't want some RINO or metrosexual touchy feely kind of guy to deal with the world, or congress for that matter.
I like Fred, I like his wit, I like that he's tired of all the games the MSM plays.
Geez... it was the MSM that labeled Jeri the "Trophy Wife". Something she herself has responded too. I think she said something to the effect that it didn't bother her too much, and after some thought, considering shes 40+ and has two small kids, is something that she will think back fondly upon later in life.
And if you think about it, I'm sure Jeri is most prized in Fred's eyes.
Too funny. I would guess that this kind of comment will cause Hillary to have to whine and drone on about how it’s time to have a woman, HER, as the next POTUS. And what better motivation for men and women to go out and vote. Hillary really brings out the dislike factor when she talks about her femininity.
Thank you. Illegal invasion and abortion are a couple of my key issues. I do like Fred, but have not decided for sure yet. I cannot see Rudy or Romney. Too many ways the Dems can nail them. Huckabee is a bit of a joke, IMO, and I am just not a McCain fan. lol I am playing it by ear. I am so afraid we may have a Clinton or Obama for POTUS.

I have seen Fred and heard him in a number of interviews. Yes he has wit and he seems very down to earth BUT I view this election as possibly being the one last chance for us to redeem ourselves as a nation after years of boneheaded immigration and foreign policy. We can’t lose more of our freedoms. We have lost so many over the past few years, I can’t believe it is our country. It is SO important that we run the right candidate.
I do understand sarcasm. I just don’t think it is necessarily appropriate under the circumstances. I’m sure he loves his wife dearly, but she is not a possession, even if the press would make her one. He just perpetuates the trophy designation by continuing to bring it up.
I’m sure he despises the MSM but when he offers throwaway lines rather than serious answers that also tells me something about him. Questions that are “silly” - and there are a lot of them - often have an underlying question that is not silly. My idea of a wise person is the one who answers the question within the question.
Arrogance doesn’t have to be about strutting around, putting on airs. It can be just a quiet, I’m going to do things my way and the h*ll with you. Part of me respects that in a candidate, but the other part sees him doing it at the wrong place and time, in the wrong way.
