Who Killed Bhutto? The Scramble for Culprits Begins

Who killed Benazir Bhutto? In a country riven by deep political differences and beset by constant violent threats from Islamist terrorists, including Al Qaeda, it is a question more easily asked than answered.

American officials are exploring whether the immediate claim of responsibility by an Al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan posted on an Italian Web site is credible. A reporter from the Web site spoke to the commander of Al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, who said, "We terminated the most precious American asset which vowed to defeat [the] mujahideen."

The report went on to say that the decision to assassinate Bhutto was taken in October by Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al Zawahri, who was imprisoned for his part in the plot which assassinated President Anwar Sadat of Egypt in 1981.

Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attempt by a suicide bomber on Bhutto's life in Karachi on October 18, when 136 were killed and at least 450 injured. After that assassination attempt she received a letter from someone claiming to be close to Mr. bin Laden, who threatened she would be slaughtered "like a goat.".........."

If this holds, Al Qaeda has made a big mistake. I hope to see an al Zawahri video on the subject.

Of the couple dozen parties with hit squads out for this, Alqaida isd the least likely. The caller who claimed it for Alqaida was a plant or glory seeker.

Al Qaeda has made a big mistake.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to retract this once they see how much damage it could do to their cause...much like they attempted to do with the 1997 Luxor massacre in Egypt. They tried to pin that one on Israelis or the Egyptian police once they realized it wasn’t playing well with the population at large. Nobody bought it and the jihadists took a big hit in Egypt. Let's hope the same happens in Pakistan.

You give too much credit to al Qaeda. They tried to kill her before. They threatened to kill her when she came back from exile. This is al Qaeda’s m.o.

They don’t necessarily take responsibility for what they do. But they aren’t very good at hiding it, either.

And I don’t necessarily think that they’ve made a mistake either. This is completely in accordance with their overall strategy to cause as much strife as possible, and hope something shakes loose that they can take advantage of. So far, they’ve played that game very successfully—at least in their view.

I hope the same. If enough get POed about this maybe they will finally get Bin Laden or al Zawahiri.

Odd hoping it was al Qaeda, but thats where I’m at right now.

I don’t even want to contemplate what the result would be if it was the Pakistani government that did this, for example.

My money is on an al-Queda sleeper in the military.

Along as al Qaeda wants to take credit for the assassination lets give it to them. This might be enough to get the general populace of Pakistan to rise up against them. This would be like what is happening in Iraq. Hopefully they have jumped the shark in Pakistan.

Maybe, but all the noise and excitement is just themselves. The rest of the adult population of the planet is hoping they will crawl back under their rock sometime soon.

Bet the “Bush did it” crowd will be out soon.

I heard Senator Chris Dodd interviewed this morning and though he danced around it, he as much blamed the Bush Administration.

...if it was the Pakistani government that did this...

That's where my money is sitting. I think Mushareff had foreknowledge of it at the very least.

But then...I'm a lousy gambler.

Or have I just missed it?

The left will point out that guns killed Bhutto. They will call on Pakistan to implement stricter gun laws.

The tactic is a repeat of the World Trade Center attack.

AQ does learn from its mistakes and always does a follow-up attack.

Most of the reports are saying the people blame the Army or Musharraf. Still, if Musharraf did order this, why did he allow her back in the first place?
