They are afraid that this portends the beginning of a wider war, much like the assassination of the Arch Duke started WWI. Could be, but I doubt it. I think this is going to be mainly internal to Pakistan. The only ways I can see it spreading is if Pakistan uses its nukes, or this is a diversion for a bigger plot that AQ has planned somewhere else, as they’ve done before.

“Bet the “Bush did it” crowd will be out soon.”

They are already out saying Bush did it on the left wing blogs.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

"Who killed Benazir Bhutto?"

To me, the question doesn't matter as much as the questions why Bhutto seemed hellbent on placing herself in harms way. Did she intend to make a martyr of herself? I can only add that her death didn't surprise me at all. Was anyone surprised?

They already took "credit".

This "who, who" nonsense is so ridiculous. Just go murder the SOBs, everyone knows who they are. See Waziristan...

If radical elements are behind it, which is most probable, they just stirred up a hornets nest!

Even in Pakistan you have people who get angry at this sort of thing and what this does is pry those non-radical elements from those who are the crazies within the Islamic world. AQ and other radical groups benefit from a high degree of support and sympathy in MOST the Islamic world. This sort of event pulls this support out from underneath their feet. -IMHO

Oh gee, and here I was hoping that he'd come out in support (s/c). Sorry, this doesn't count as the sort of "hearing from all of us soon" that we were promised.

How about instead sending B-52s from Diego to Waziristan, plus a brigade or so down from Afghanistan by helo? If Mu so much as raises an eyebrow, toss him to the angry mobs.

We will no doubt play this as another round of inside baseball with the ISI, and get another sore backside for our pains. When the truth is, right now, an arclight would be downright popular. Or forty.

As for the whoever did this talk, um, there are already men taking credit. If they are lying, so what? There wanting it to happen or being please about it, is reason enough to reduce them to atoms.

Too soon to tell. Her threat to oppose al Qaeda's remaining major sanctuary and one expressed by her husband to cleanse the ISI are inextricably interwoven, the ISI being said to be hopelessly compromised by Islamist radicals. Whether Musharraf will himself move on Waziristan is yet to be known, as is whether the army will stick with him should he decided to.

But Bhutto's threat to move on Waziristan was only that - she hadn't any power to make good on it and might not have for some time to come. I don't think this action was as much to forestall that as it was to enlarge the arena of violence throughout Pakistan in the hopes that the al Qaeda sanctuaries would thereby diminish in importance. Given the role of nuclear weaponry in that debate, it may have worked.

I understand from another thread that Wolf Blitzer is blaming Mushariff based on a “secret e-mail” from Bhuto. This is the equivalent of openly blaming LBJ for JFK’s death before the dust settled. Totally irresponsible.

Musharraf had to allow Bhutto into the country because of the political pressure. Besides, if he wanted to kill her it’s much easier to do in Pakistan. I think by initially placing her under house arrest he sent her a message that she is safe only behind the walls and she is free to leave the country. With regard to AQ vs. ISI they are close allies even despite the purges that Musharraf tried earlier. All in all, Bhutto had too many enemies.
