AOL Lovepoint: Time Warner subsidiary encourages infidelity/cheating

Just got alerted to this from a buddy in Germany. Time Warner subsidiary AOL is running a "dating" website through AOL Germany which offers AOL users the opportunity to cheat on their spouses. It's like a dating site but the gist of it is that AOL users can register discreetly to find other, interested cheaters. It offers "Affairs" and "Seitensprünge" which is the German term for a quick, one night stand outside of marriage.

Now if it wasn't sick enough for Time Warner to stoop this low, they're advertising that a portion of the proceeds go to needy children in places like Africa. How nice! Promote infidelity and give a kid a bowl of rice at the same time!

Anyway, if you read a bit of German, the URL is www.aol.lovepoint.de

If it were lovepoint.aol.de instead of aol.lovepoint.de, I might actually believe it.

AOL Germany is actively marketing the website to its users.

You said — “If it were lovepoint.aol.de instead of aol.lovepoint.de, I might actually believe it.”

From having experience with AOL, in the past, and seeing how they have “benefits” for their members, through access from the AOL accounts and then “referring” those over to outside websites, but to specific areas of those “outside websites” — it’s entirely possible that this address of “aol.lovepoint.de” is the “entrance” for AOL members, in which they are given the services of that outside website, by virtue of the fact that they are AOL members.

And if you try to access that particular address from a non-AOL account, you will not receive the benefits of the service. That’s how AOL has included services “inside” AOL, but yet, by accessing outside companies (who have “partnered” with AOL).

Star Traveler

If the cheaters weren’t getting help from AOL they’d be getting help from another source.

You said — “AOL Germany is actively marketing the website to its users.”

Yeah..., and since they are doing that (by your word), then that’s a clear indication that they’ve got a partnership agreement with that company, in which they have a “referral address” for all AOL members, so they will have the “benefits” that AOL has arranged with that outside company...

It’s the same thing as AOL offering the service themselves. AOL does that with a lot of their web services (partnering with these various outside services).

Hey My Space is the worst. My daughter’s ex boyfriend would flirt all the time with other girls in the school through his My Space. Glad she is rid of him.

Any site like this is a license for infidelity. I have had a couple of friends who busted their husbands cheating via the net.

The net is a blessing and can be a curse.

LOL! I can just see it. Free for the first few months, then if you don't pay the $250 monthly fee, they'll send the internet transcripts to your spouse and her lawyer...

True, and it maybe they are paying AOL for access to such accounts - other companies have in the past. You know what though, it wouldn’t surprise me if whoever at AOL made the decision for this had no idea what the purpose was. I could see somebody spinning it a certain way and the AOL person thinking “sounds great, we’ll make some good money”. Considering AOL has some fierce competition in the matchmaker market (at least they do in the US, I’m seeing stupid eHarmony commercials all the time, and unless they are AOL, somebody has put some money behind them), I could see AOL working different angles as well.

Thanks,Polybius.

I recognized her immediately—that’s because of how much time I studied her way back when.;)

Those eyes and cheekbones-—she’ll always be beautiful.
