DES MOINES, IOWA -- Fred Thompson talked to CBS News about the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
"I had a chance to visit Pakistan a few years ago and I talked to Musharraf and other leaders there and I followed it closely ever since. It is an important part of the world," Thompson said.
Obviously there is a personal tragedy. There is a a national security interest as far as we are concerned. There is a stability question as far as Pakistan is concerned," he continued.
"It's a very touchy situtaion. I said earlier this morning that it looked to me that without question it was an Al-Qaeda backed operation. I notice in the last little while they have taken credit for it now."
"I think the fact that a secular woman had a chance of ascending to power in Pakistan again as prime minister probably drove the more looney of them to do something like that -- that in of itself. Plus the fact that this reminds us that this is part of a much greater picture - this is a war that we are engaged in and it is an international conflict...Pakistan and other parts of the world are part of this and they are under attack."
He gets it. Thankfully, someone gets it.
Mmmmm, Fred got caught out on this one poorly informed. He needs to bone up or get a good adviser if he wants to be seen as being up on foreign policy. We expect all the candidates to be slightly more informed than the average citizen. Well, those citizens who follow the news.
Why don’t you clue the rest of us in, oh sage one?
I say less charisma, and more normalcy. Reagan was right to revive Coolidge. When the government did the least, America advanced the most. Think of how many “great ideas” are brought to the President for action. It must be hard to say no. Doing nothing must be the toughest job in town, when everyone wants you to act.
I expect President Thompson can give the order to the military when the time is right. That's a proper job for the Commander in Chief.
Perhaps he means if Fred were up to speed he would already have apologized for the events in Pakistan like the Huckster did.........
/do I really need a sarc tag ?
Care to explain your post?
Don’t expect much from this particular poster.
I lived for four years in Pakistan during which time the government changed several times, including one stint with Benazir as Prime Minister. I dealt with her ministers and met her once briefly in Karachi. I know the country quite well.
Fred’s answer was spot on, and it appears that NewRomeTacitus has no clue whatsoever.
Read about Fred’s behavior when he visited Pakistan:

A former CIA officer recalls what happened when Thompson and seven other members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Committee visited Pakistan in late 2002.
The other senators, including John Edwards, attended the classified intelligence briefing, the former officer says. Thompson blew it off and spent a lot of time drinking and eating.
An unidentified, alleged CIA insider told that tale to a columnist preparing an anti-Fred hit-piece.
Blah blah blah.
Piss off, trolls.
God bless America.
Just saying Fred got caught uneducated on this...no one said he was Charlie Wilson. But - I’d trust Fred to learn what’s going on, determine if America should be involved and make a wise decision. Thompson would make a good President. I’m writing Hunter into the Primary but will vote for Fred if it comes down to him.
BTW, I and millions of others wrote Tancredo into the last Primaries, which enabled him to be in this election shaping the agenda - so phooey on everyone who told me I was being foolish.
Surely you know I only troll for loose women.
Alright, I retract post#14 in your case (not for Saundra, though). But what do you think he’s missing here?
Tancredo has asked people to support Mitt Romney.
Hold the phone! Are you guys insinuating that I’m a “loose woman”? Ha!
