FWIW: While English should be the primary language of instruction in ALL U.S. schools, we are PATHETIC in that we don’t start teaching second languages in grade school. I would love for my children to start learning Spanish, Mandarin, or even Arabic from a young age (French, of course, is useless).

Remember, it's spoken by many people outside of France - many Africans, for example. And, once you learn one of the Romance languages, the others are easier to pick up. (My husband was able to speak French fluently at one time, though he may be out of practice now.)

Apparently Rosetta Stone is a fabulous way to teach kids a second language. They are actually using it in our school this year.
