Senator Thompson also served as a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the National Security Working Group, which observes and monitors executive branch negotiations with foreign governments. In 1980; he was special counsel, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations 1980-1981; special counsel, Senate Intelligence Committee. Fred was also Chairman of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice's Intelligence Advisory Board for several years before he became a candidate for the White House.
