There could be some discord during the Tournament of Roses Parade as demonstrators promise to raise issues during the holiday spectacle that has been going on for more than a century. Human rights advocates plan to protest a float honoring the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and anti-war activists, including "Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan, intend to rally for peace.

The theme of this year's New Year's Day parade is "Passport to the World's Celebrations." It will feature 46 floats, 21 marching bands and 18 equestrian units...

"Passport to the World's Celebrations."

LOL... It's interesting that they use the word 'passport' when many of the people who grow the flowers and decorate the floats do not have one when entering the US.

Is there not one tradition in this country that is not being trashed?

They just want to get on TV.

I hope they won’t be allowed anywhere near the Rose Parade.

People have a right to protest, but NOT anywhere, any time, at the place and time of their choosing, disregarding the rights of everyone else to NOT be annoyed by them.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Sheehan tasered several times on national TV, just for the entertainment value, you understand. /sarc

I put the blame squarely on the large shoulders of the public education(sic) system.

As you already know, no.

No /sarc tag necessary....It would be extremely humorous:

Cindy Sheehag: "Don't tase me bro!"
Pasadena Cop: BBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTT!
Cindy Sheehag: "OOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"

LOL!

Let ‘em protest all they want—from a confined area 10 blocks away.

My brother in law is the director of Lakota West H.S. from Westchester, Ohio. They just left this morning for So. Cal. to march in the Rose Parade. And its a family affair, as my son is a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band and will follow a few days later with a trip to New Orleans and the BCS Championship game.

BTW, I hope Sheehan embarrasses herself again. It's good for our cause.

These “human rights advocates” (total misnomer) are all about drawing attention to themselves. They could care less about their “causes.” They exist only to excuse their “hey, look at me” childishness.

Maybe the lead float will be a bulldozer, and Cindy may have Rachel Corrie disease? We could only hope something will put the wretch out of her misery.

I've actually seen the Rose Parade a couple of times from a nice vantage point along the route because my wife's extended family works for one of the businesses along the route.

No sooner does the last float pass by than there are a few hundred odd protesters who follow in the wake. Most are perfectly harmless like the Jesus Freaks and Save the Whales crowd. Others are really annoying and loud.

The TV cameras cut off and most of the crowd is breaking up by this time, but there are always a few who need to be handcuffed and hauled away to clear the street for traffic.

..and tied to posts standing up on their own float, maced again and again for the whole length of the parade for all to see. Hand out 1 million eggs to the crowds 500ft before that float makes it to those spectators.

Welcome to Pasadena, you Ohioans. We have fairly warm weather (well, for Ohio), clear skies, great coffee, SUN and the Blue Line is all painted and ready. I think it has been into the 30s at night, tho. High 30s.

It’s a great parade to be IN and to watch in person. The bands are all wonderful, the horses are beautiful, everyone is so amped and ready to celebrate. The floats will be beautiful, and the view against the mountains is wonderful. A good time of year to visit. Welcome, welcome.

I still remember the Cal Poly float shooting a water fire extinguisher out its infrastructure at students holding Cal Poly signs right across from the TV broadcasters (where the parade turns a corner), but on the far side of the floats from the TV folks. TV missed it, at least on the two stations I’d taped, but my dad caught it on video.

In 1968, the anti-war crowd sunk any chance of a Dem victory in the the POTUS election. The American public was treated to a display of violent anti-war protests, magnified by TV coverage. The result, of course, was “Law and Order” President Nixon, who accelerated the prosecution of the war.

There is a significant chance that the next Dem convention will have antiwar protest, a spit ticket, etc.
