Online Youth Poll Lobs Shots at Pols

WASHINGTON, DC -- While the 2008 presidential candidates are taking potshots at each other, some young Americans are taking shots at the entire two-party system.

When asked to respond to a YouTube video by Medill News Service that shows young adults shouting the first five words they think of when they hear the words Republican and Democrat, one 19-year-old called the two-party system a failure, an opinion supported by a 28-year-old.

Adam Fletcher, executive director of CommonAction, an Olympia, Wash., group that focuses on young voters, said those opinions are typical of youth disillusionment toward the parties.

"Quite simply, the two-party system doesn't reflect the interests of the majority of young people," Fletcher said.

In the video titled "I say Republican, you say?" Washington area young people used phrases such as "gay-bashing," "out of office, please," and "moral" to describe Republicans. They described Democrats as "elitist," running a "pathetic Congress" and "hopeful."

Young people were asked to weigh in with their own words on YouTube last month. The video received more than 1,100 views and nearly 30 comments, most of them negative toward both parties. One respondent used "high expectations, weapons of mass destruction, war" for Republicans and "easy way, pleaser, finding ways to better our education system" for Democrats.

Other responses were argumentative and clearly aimed at one party or the other. "They can't understand abstract concepts, like 'torture' or 'the Constitution,' " one said of Republicans.

A 20-year-old fired back, "You have to treat Democrats like the unpatriotic communists they are."

They are smarter than I thought and certainly smarter than most adults that vote.

"Quite simply, the two-party system doesn't reflect the interests of the majority of young people," Fletcher said.

In other words, neither party has declared getting laid a constitutional right to be provided by the federal government.

Give the democrats time, kiddies. I'm sure they'll get to it.

If they are like the 20-somethings I know, they don’t even bother to vote.

Plus, they seem to be one-issue voters — the war, environmental issues, global warming, etc. I don’t know of any that are for increasing freedom and personal responsibility, lower taxes, etc.

I’m 25 and have always voted GOP, for all the good it’s done.

“I’m 25 and have always voted GOP, for all the good it’s done.”

What’s the bent of most of your friends? I bet most lean toward gov’t solutions for every problem in life, right?

I haven’t seen most of them lately. But the few times we discussed politics they seemed conservative enough.

I just love hearing the wisdom of the chiiiillldreen.

It's like when one of the local schools declares a new dress code forbidding bare midriffs and trousers belted at the crotch. You can be sure that at least one TV station will consider it news to interview some of the students and declare that the kids don't like it.

Why do some people find this worth printing?

I agree with them. The two party system is a complete failure.

That may not be a completely fair comment...but I think it's safe to say that it currently doesn't seem to succeed in holding to a balanced budget.

You: “What an idiotic comment.”

Me: You didn’t understand it, right? If you stay in school, maybe you’ll rise to the idiot level.

Our Country IS in a serious mess.

Time and again - Bush I and Bush II, along with many Congressvermin and even local politicos, we have voted Republicans into Office, thinking we were getting an alternative to the Demcorats, only to find out we have elected their pale shadows.

Now, with a few exceptions - Hunter, Thompson and departed Tancredo - we have a pack of suddenly reborn “conservative” Republicans running - men who have in the past played footsies with the Dems on illegal invaders, taxes, abortion, the Second Amendment, “gay” rights, and a host of other issues. We have individuals running for office who are ignoring the growing threat from Red China - militarily and economically, thanks in no small part to our own ecomomic policies - because it benefits them and their U.N. pandering globalist buddies. They have, for the most part been silent on the growing threats from Islam - here in our own borders and overseas.

If the Republican we put in office - I can’t believe any sane person could possibly vote for anybody on the other side of the isle - turns out like this disappointment in the White House NOW - it WILL be time for another political party to flush out the parasitic rats in both of the current parties who sit in Washington, ignoring us, and stuffing their own pockets.
