The worst was in 1984-85. My brother in Leesburg lost about 100 acres. The citrus trees actually froze solid and split.

I remember that time — some of my friends in high school had father’s who owned groves. They used to tell me about having to tent the trees and keep little smudge pots burning (they’d give off just enough heat). Still, some lost a majority of their crop. It was a tough year.

It was a record -24 at my house that winter. I remember it well, as the oil lines burst and I got to chop wood most of the night.
