It isn’t just the lefties, most Conservatives I know support civil unions of some sort over changing marriage because with a union contract, it shouldn’t be the government’s business what sex or sexual orientation someone is. It keeps this issue separate from changing the definition of marriage.

Civil union isn't marriage. It is a contract entered into freely by of-age adults and as such is none of my business.

I can't think of any reason why adults shouldn't be able to freely make such a contract. Some so-called conservatives would surrender the freedom to contract for a legal matter in the name of some notion of morality that no one is legally required to observe.

One doesn't have to like the free choices of others to be willing to protect the right of such choices.

The civil union thing should be extended to animals, siblings, or whatever toots your horn. I don’t see why it should be restricted to sexual deviants only or for that matter why one is expected to be a deviant to qualify.

It’s an AOL poll. What did you expect? My guess is that 53% of the employees of AOL/Time Warner are currently in “civil unions”—or in the case of most homosexual liaisons, uncivil unions.
