Battle Over Possible Euthanasia of New York Teenager Gets Pro-Life Attention
Life News ^ | 1/1/08 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 01/02/2008 3:57:55 PM PST by wagglebee

Bronx, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The battle over the life and death of a teenage girl in New York has drawn the attention of pro-life advocates in recent days. The fight to save Javona Peters reminds some of the struggle of the Schindler family in Florida to save the life of Terri Schiavo, a beloved daughter and sibling whose former husband eventually took her life.

In this case, Peters' parents are disagreeing on whether or not to remove her feeding tube and take her life.

Peters fell into a coma in October while she had a routine medical procedure at Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors have pegged her as being in a persistent vegetative state, a medical diagnosis pro-life advocates dispute because so many patients have partially or fully recovered.

Peters' parents were never married and are estranged and have considered a medical malpractice suit against the hospital, according to a New York Daily News report.

But Janet Joseph and Leonard Peters are also feuding over Peters' care and have each filed separate requests to be given custody of their daughter. Peters has been opposed to removing the feeding tube but has wavered recently.

Edward Gersowitz, an attorney for Joseph, told the newspaper that "Because of her condition, she cannot make decisions for herself, and the court will have to appoint a guardian to make decisions for her."

As a teen, Peters doesn't have a living will or some other advanced directive providing guidelines for the type of medical treatment, or withdrawal, she favors.

The case has drawn the attention of the Schindler family, which sent out a notice about the case from its foundation, which helps disabled patients receive legal help and appropriate medical care.

Leading bioethics watchdog Wesley J. Smith has also commented on it and he says the PVS diagnosis seems "rushed" to him.

Smith says he sympathizes with the father and the pressure he is under to take Peters' life.

"We know that too often medical teams and social workers pressure and cajole for such outcomes," he said.

Smith draws comparisons to the case of Haleigh Poutre, a Massachusetts girl whom LifeNews.com reported was also declared PVS, but who has recovered from the abuse she suffered.

In that case, state government officials had ordered her feeding tube removed but she recovered from the PVS state shortly beforehand.

In America today, abortions are routine medical procedures, and there are many more problems and “complications” than those who support legalized abortion will admit. I wonder if her coma came while she was having an abortion.

....why an abortion? Thats not a routine medical procedure. Why not a tonsilectomy or having adenoids removed? Those are routine procedures.

I hope there is as much concern for Javona as there was for Terri. We need to be praying for her.

This is the best support of my thesis I have found so far. Dr. Death uses the leftist concept of projection to a profound degree. This mass murderer is rescued from himself by a benevolent, albeit weak system which winds up rewarding him after his energetic success in slaughtering people. Then this model of Hitlerian perfection projects to us that he is the victim and we are the Nazis. Haters call people they hate haters.

......................................

America is "no different than Nazi Germany; they were aggressive too, [but] they were more honest about it. See, unfortunately for the Nazis, there was another power that could counteract them, the United States. Who can counteract us? America is like a bull in a china shop. There is no way to fight them. They can do what they want, lie, cheat and steal - and they do."

"You think Iraq is a war? It's not a war, it's a modified genocide. You could solve the whole problem in the Middle East with one act; withdraw entirely everything from the Middle East... Nobody loves armed missionaries. Every soldier we have around the world is an armed missionary. And you praise him? No you don't praise him, damn him."

"You have a renegade, rogue, criminalistic country. Why are you hated in the rest of the world? Why? Because they know what you are, but you don't know, because you're living well," Kevorkian said.

"We're a fascist country you know... I'm not proud to be an American; I'm not proud to be a genocidal aggressor. America is wrong," Kevorkian declared. "We are a criminal country... we have a criminal group in Washington, [a] bunch of criminal dictators."............

We are keeping a daily watch of any and all news updates on Javona on this thread and hopefully have aroused some good people to action. Terri’s family, the Schindler’s have taken notice already.

More echoes from Jack the Dripper's tirades...

...........................

The Terri Schindler Schiavo Foundation presented the institution with a petition containing 5,000 signatures asking it to rescind its invitation to Dr. Kevorkian. The foundation was formed after Florida authorities allowed the woman, whose name it bears, to die of starvation and thirst at the behest of her husband, Michael Schiavo.

In response, UF President J. Bernard Machen wrote to the woman's brother, Bobby Schindler, who heads the foundation, "As an institution of higher education, we value the free expression of ideas and the educational opportunities that arise from such communication."

The UF Pro-Life Alliance, a student-led organization that helps women who have unexpectedly become pregnant, also protested the university's decision to allow Dr. Kevorkian to speak.

"Our group opposes this speech because the university is paying an exorbitant amount of money to a man who has been convicted of murder," said group leader Katherine Schinn. "Another concern is to promote assisted suicide in general."....................................

I excerpted this article which ties together Terri's plight with the raving topics of Jack the Dripper...

..................................

Walk Me to Midnight by Jane St. Clair is a new pro-life novel from Capstone Fiction. It is a chilling medical thriller guaranteed to keep you up reading all nightlong until you reach the horrifying conclusion. Available January 1, 2008 from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Q. How did you come to write Walk Me to Midnight?

First, I was with my mother, sister and father during their long deaths by cancer. I was with them when they died. They were very vulnerable, but the hospice nurses knew what to do and how to help us. That's why I dedicated Walk Me to Midnight to hospice nurses.

Second, I was doing a lot of crime writing and became very interested in forensic science. I wrote two Law and Order television scripts and one CSI that placed high in national contests. I wanted to do a pro-life thriller.

Third, I believe that the assisted suicide movement is misdirected. I want to help the hospice movement.

Q.Do you think a terminally ill person should have the right to commit suicide?

Anyone can commit suicide at any time so getting assisted suicide laws passed is not about anyone's personal right to do anything. Committing suicide may be against the law, but after you're dead, you can't be prosecuted or punished.

People who want to commit suicide can do it themselves. The idea that they are so sick that they can't fire a gun or take some drugs is just untrue. Usually if you have a terminal illness, you know how long you left to live. You have ample time to commit suicide. If you are too sick to swallow, you don't have that long to live anyway.

~Snip~

Q. Why are you against laws that allow doctors to prescribe lethal doses to terminally ill people?

An old saying in law is that bad cases make bad law. When a situation is too complex, there is no way to write a good law that covers every situation. There are too many variables. Assisted suicide is like that. Do you treat a 21-year-old the same as a 95-year-old? How do you determine competence in someone all drugged up? How do you determine Terri Schiavo's desires when she left no written instructions?

Also, the Netherlands experience teaches us that even if you have two doctors to supervise each patient's "suicide," there is plenty of room for corruption. Insurance companies and often the person's relatives have personal stakes in having that person die quickly. It saves them money, allows them to inherit quicker, or allows them relief from the burden of the person's care. Often these are unconscious motives. Studies have shown that when there are assisted suicide laws, dying people feel obligated to end their lives prematurely. When given a choice, most people want to live as long as possible.........................

From HLI, ten challenges are offered to us pro life warriors...

Thread by wagglebee.

As we gear up for next Tuesday's March for Life in Washington DC, I offer this list of challenges to the pro-life movement in America. If we really wish to beat the abortion culture we have to mature as a movement. Thirty-five years of the same strategies and ideas have not gained us the victory we seek because the fight against the most pervasive spiritual evil that has ever entered the world can only be won on God's terms. The pro-life movement has invested more in political and cultural change than in spiritual change. Let us not be afraid to fight Goliath's weapons of mass destruction with the faith of David who came against the giant "in the name of the Lord of Hosts." (1 Sam 17:45)...............

Used parts industry in the UK...

Thread by wagglebee.

LONDON, January 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The British government's plans to consider a presumed consent scheme for organ donations was put on the back burner this week as a government appointed taskforce recommended alternative methods to increase organ donations by 50 per cent. But the wording of the recommendations has alarmed pro-life advocates who warn they may increase threats to the lives of vulnerable patients.

Elisabeth Buggins, chair of the task force, wrote, "The UK has one of the worst records for organ donation in Western Europe. The Taskforce was, however, greatly encouraged by the evidence it considered from across the world and believes that a 50% increase in organ donation is possible and achievable in the UK within five years. We are convinced that this goal will only be realised if our recommendations are considered and acted on as a whole."

But the report's wording echoes that of previous legislation that has created a significant threat to patients. In its report published yesterday by the Department of Heath, the taskforce says that a patient becomes a potential donor "when a decision has been taken - in the best interests of the patient - that further active treatment is no longer appropriate and should be withdrawn."...........

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new report by an organization affiliated with Planned Parenthood finds that the number of abortions nationwide have fallen to their lowest point in 30 years and have declined 25 percent since 1990. Pro-life groups point to laws limiting abortions, the effectiveness of pregnancy centers and abstinence education as the reason why............

Simple as ABC...

Thread by wagglebee on another dumb statement.

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- ABC News is drawing criticism for promoting a controversial author with a refuted claim that legalized abortion has helped reduce the level of crime in the United States. "Freakonomics" co-author Stephen Dubner appeared on Thursday's "Good Morning America" program even though other researchers have disproved his contention.

During the interview, Dubner repeated the abortion-crime claims.

"What happened when Roe V. Wade was handed down was that unwanted children are basically at a much greater risk for being born into the circumstances where they're more likely to lead a criminal life," he said. "Not every unwanted child by a long stretch, but typically."...........

We are certainly praying for her and there are lots of people trying to make people aware of her situation. Unfortunately, there are issues with Javona's parents and their disagreement over what should be done.

I spend a lot of time yesterday pondering Dr. Death’s Uzi remark and it finally dawned on me what his angle was.

He knows that the leftists are totally on board with the culture of death’s agenda and they know that he really won’t interfere with gun grabbing.

However, many libertarians are “on the fence” on the culture of death, but when they hear that Dr. Death is also pro-gun, they might decide to give him their support. This was a ploy to garner support from them for his gruesome agenda.

Thank you, lula, for pointing this out. Admin Moderator, I am not sure what happened, myself, but my Googled links keep vanishing. The url is copied but when I test now before posting, they are curtailed and do not reach the links. It only happened this morning and has not happened like this before. I was doing the same things today as I have before.

I also noticed interestingly several articles which appeared on Google News this morning about Dr. Kevorkian, the ones I linked, have vanished from Google News.

Though we may forget or have other priorities, the left doesn't change, cannot shake the legacy of Terri, even to the point of taking on Rudy.

RUDY GIULIANI: You seek the nomination of a party which believes government should control women’s reproductive choices, gays’ marriage rights, individuals’ choices to save their own lives by using medicinal marijuana while undergoing chemotherapy, people’s right to take their own lives rather than undergoing a painful and protracted death, not to mention Terri Schiavo’s family medical crisis, and was so obsessed with Bill Clinton’s personal sex life that they impeached him. And yet when there are questions raised about your very public extramarital affairs, your divorces, your marriage to your cousin and your children who aren’t speaking to you and are supporting other candidates, you responded by saying "Leave my family alone". Yeah, you actually said that. My question is whether you’d care to apologize to the rest of the country for your party’s relentless interventions into the private lives of our families? Or are you satisfied instead to be the hypocrite of the millennium?

So You Wanna Be My President, Huh? Answer Me This!

This liberal by following her own logic sets for herself a god who would favor the killing of innocents. But sometimes logic is a tough commodity to find in those who substitute emotion for reason even if capable of quoting selected Bible verses.

They are laws created by people for people. Once you start ascribing a law to God, the next question must be “whose god?” Is it a fundamentalist god who would let Terry Schiavo go on living despite the pleas of her husband and evidence that she is already deceased? Or the God who would suggest that although we should not hasten death, we should neither prolong it?............

Keep it up, Fred.

Speaking of Huckabee, Fred Thompson gets it right on nailing Huck on his words. They spill out from a Democrat playbook and Fred rings clear. Thread by wagglebee.

.................................

"Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I don't think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism," Thompson explained.

"He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across our nation," Thompson added.

"I do not believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document. I am committed to appointing strict constructionist judges to the bench if I am elected President, strict constructionists who believe the Constitution has a fixed meaning that can be applied to cases that come before the courts today," Thompson said.
