"Let the political world swirl around me and let everyone run their attack ads and spend their money and spin their wheels and all that. But I'm going to be the same. It's worked for me pretty well in my career, being Fred, and I'm going to continue to be Fred."

Just as Reagan was Reagan, when others wanted him to be something else.

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

God bless you,"Granddaddy", and all of those who understand, and who are - men.

I rarely wear a tinfoil hat- but the deliberate blackout of Fred and even Hunter seems ..orchestrated.

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.

Three words- Campaign Finance Reform.

Thompson is my second choice, a good distance behind Hunter. I like him, but let's not go overboard about how conservative he is.

I rarely wear a tinfoil hat- but the deliberate blackout of Fred and even Hunter seems ..orchestrated.

That's because it is, at least on certain levels. Perhaps a better way to say it would be that the coverage is guided. It only requires a few carefully placed cues or hints dropped from a handful of so-called respected journalists or political experts to set the template and the herd mentality of the MSM hive mind does the rest.

I don't doubt that there are efforts at orchestration by "some" influential and strategically placed individuals, but the pattern we're observing is not so much the result of a conspiracy as it is simply a planted or "chummed" consensus which has been glommed onto by an amazingly ignorant, generally stupid and easily-led MSM and followed, unthinkingly and in unison, just like a school of hungry fish.

The problem is that while in real science, e.g. the global warming scam, consensus cannot ultimately triumph over facts, in politics and other human behavior it often does... /grin

Exactly- it’s amazing to watch, isn’t it?

Very subtle..and if one isn’t paying attention..

I keep thinking of the book The Tipping Point.

from the reporters I have seen in person, they believe they will take congress and the presidency because they believe left wing is the majority.

They don’t think they NEED to cover conservatives or republicans because they are not relevant to their “taking back” (as if it was theirs).

Jim, you/we ARE (along with Rush Limbaugh et al) the alternative to the drive-bys. It’s about time the New Media gets some respect.

I am so frustrated by the media hacks this morning passing along this fabricated rumor that Thompson is about to drop out. It’s like saying that the football team down by two points is going to forfeit the game. Let the man fight it out. He’s got the ball!

G-d bless Free Republic and G-d bless Fred Thompson today in Iowa!

They used to mock candidate Bush’s early bedtimes! As if we want a President staying up late partying with interns.

Surf the internet and check out the conservative forums, especially the granddaddy of them all, FreeRepublic.com, to see who garners the most support among them.

Jim. Could you get me a date with Lisa Fabrizio? I want her to have my babies.

Nice piece from Lisa at TAS; and thanks for sharing.

It's not just the broadcast media that has been ignoring and/or slighting bona fide conservatives amongst the Republican candidates. The New Hampshire Union Leader has been hawking McCain via front-page editorials while providing little coverage of Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter. National Review has endorsed Mitt Romney, after having giving considerable coverage to Mssrs. Huckabee and McCain... and not so much to Duncan Hunter, whose policy positions most closely reflect NR's own editorial philosophy for, say, the past half century.

It seems as though the right-leaning media (who can now meet in something slightly larger than a phone booth) have collectively decided that Ronald Reagan was the only "electable" conservative they'll ever see, and anyone else falls short of the mark. Hence a march to the dreary, Muddled Middle.

The electorate is also presumed to have become more liberal in recent years, or at least much less conservative than it once was. Well perhaps it has, but wasn't it Ronald Reagan who helped move the electorate in a conservative direction in the late 70s (with a backhanded assist from the feckless Jimmy Carter)? Why cannot a strong, articulate, principled conservative do the same today?

It is one thing to press for Presidential "electability", but quite another to ignore the interests of those most likely to work passionately for the eventual Republican nominee - and to turn out the vote. I know many such people, and such people do not often refer to themselves as "centrists".
