Unemployed to Sterilize Monkeys in India

Indian State Plans to Train Unemployed Youth to Sterilize Monkeys Plaguing Area

A north Indian state said Thursday Jan. 3, 2008, that it planned to use unemployed youths to sterilize monkeys who may then be sent to camps in an effort to combat the aggressive primates who have been raiding farms in the area. The idea drew immediate condemnation from conservationists who said the plan was unscientific and would likely exacerbate the problem of aggressive monkeys that plague many regions of India. A northern Indian state said Thursday it planned to use unemployed youths to sterilize monkeys to try to combat aggressive primates who have been raiding farms. The idea drew immediate condemnation from conservationists, who said the plan was unscientific and would likely worsen the problem.

Indian authorities have struggled in recent years to deal with the tens of thousands of monkeys that live in and around cities. They are drawn to public places such as temples and office buildings, where devout Hindus feed them, believing them to be manifestations of the god Hanuman.

In recent months, the deputy mayor of New Delhi was killed when he fell from his balcony during an attack by wild monkeys, and 25 others were injured when a monkey went on a rampage in the city.

The mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh is infested with rhesus macaque monkeys, who have been driven to farms and cities after losing their natural forest habitat.

Prem Kumar Dhumal, the state's chief minister, said Himachal Pradesh would go on a "war footing" to fight the thousands of monkeys who have been turning farms into wastelands and attacking people, according to a statement from his office.

"Affected districts would be identified and local youth involved in the process, who would be provided training in capturing and sterilization by the experts," the statement quoted Dhumal as saying, adding that they would use "laser sterilization."

The capacity of zoos in the area would be expanded to accommodate captured monkeys, and camps may be set up for them in order to protect crops and other farmland from being encroached upon, the statement said.

Conservationists condemned the proposal to let inexperienced youths sterilize monkeys, saying it was cruel and would not solve the problem.

Sujoy Chaudhuri, an ecologist who co-authored a report by prominent primatologists and conservationists that was submitted recently to the federal and state governments, said the plan would make the monkey problem worse.

I have a feeling this is a trick program actually aimed at reducing the number of unemployed.

If you have ever been close to an enraged monkey you might get an idea why. I can think of a lot of things I would rather be doing than slicing off monkey balls. I imagine they would object, strenuously!!!

Where’s a hungry cobra or Russell’s viper when you need them?

Spaying and neutering? That’s strong. Couldn’t you just teach the yoots to spank them instead?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to shoot a few thousand here and there???

My guess is that they would prefer to have thousands of illiterate, destitute 'youts' roaming the countryside with laser scalpels rather than guns, and they may also not quite know what to do with a hundred million tons of rotting monkey meat and a new 'holy war' being waged against the Government because they are killing the reincarnation of Hanuman......

Since the monkeys are “aggressive and combative”, I don’t think they’re going to take well to involuntary sterilization.

I’m glad I’m not an unemployed youth in India.

After Pearl Harbor, besieged American soldiers on the Bataan Peninsula were forced to eat monkey meat to survive. Mess sergeants’ ingenuity was tested to the utmost.

One survivor observed, “It wasn’t that bad, unless your serving included the hands in your messkit.”

Anyway, there’s a variety of meats these Hindus need to stop worshipping and start eating, IMHO.

I saw a clip on TV about families that have food stolen out of windows and monkeys coming in windows at night to attack kids. I think if we can exterminate rodents, small monkey’s that attack my kids would fall into that catagory.

Agreed.  I believe that political expediency is rearing it's head in this matter.

“You gotta have a lot of balls to try to sterilize a monkey.”

For transplant, unless you get a really good shark suit.

So the idle yoot

will undergo tutoring

to become adept at primate neutering.

What a hoot!

"...there’s a variety of meats these Hindus need to stop worshipping and start eating..."

Wow, I think you hit upon a solution to a small facet of their backwardness and lack of social and cultural progress. Well Done sir!

Here in America the only time you see cattle down on all fours is when they’re in the middle of a thunderstorm.

All that prime Brahma beefsteak going to waste! No wonder Indians are so gaunt and skinny.

Hey wait a second, I was deployed to Uzbekistan 2003-04 in Central Asia. Slaughtered beef for sale everywhere in the villages and the Uzbeks are a lean people (beautiful slender Uzbek women abound, look them up on youtube!).

Oh, and cities in Uzbekistan are much cleaner than those in India.

This begs the question of what kind of wine goes with monkey.

There’s got to be a Cajun or Creole recipe for monkey.

There’s got to be a Cajun or Creole recipe for monkey. Not unless there are monkeys running loose in the swamps in the south. Although a good rue is the key. Humm. Monkey jambalaya.... I was thinking more Asian like Sweet and Sour Monkey, Kung Pao Monkey, or Monkey Fried Rice. Doesn't it just make your mouth water?
