Police: Woman demanded money for her good deed

Madison police said a man in a wheelchair was robbed by a woman who helped free him from a snowbank on Christmas Eve and then demanded payment for her good deed.

The Madison man, who is in his 40s and has cerebral palsy, told officers he was on his way to the drugstore to get medication about 9:30 p.m. when his chair became stuck in the snow on East Washington Avenue near Johnson Street, police said.

The man said the woman, "who at first appeared (to be) a good Samaritan, " got him out of the snow but then wanted money, according to a police report released Wednesday. He was afraid to say no, police said.

"She didn 't physically harm him or show a weapon, but he felt threatened, " Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

The two then went to a cash machine where the man gave her some money -- less than $100, police said -- from his account. "He tells her the code and she punches in the numbers, " DeSpain said.

As kids we used to play street hockey down at the end of our block. It was near the bottom of the hill at a curve on another road. We rescued numerous cars from the snow bank on icy winter nights and they often would give us a “tip” - although we never asked for one. (We did come up with the idea that if we poured water on the street we would be able to help even more folks! Never did do it though!!)

Pouring water on the street to make it icier works better in theory than reality.

Or so I’ve heard. ;-)

Once you ask for money it is no longer a good deed.
