CBS Drops Its Ombudsman

CBS News, which set up the website Public Eye in 2005 "to bring transparency to the editorial operations of CBS News," is shutting the site down, according to the TVNewser website. There have been no new postings on the site since shortly after editor Matthew Felling was abruptly let go last month. A spokesperson for CBS Interactive told TVNewser, "We weren't able to find a sustainable business model for Public Eye. We are exploring ways to maintain a similar spirit of public discourse by engaging the CBSNews.com audience and building a community around multiple voices." Kevin Roderick, who oversees the L.A. Observed website, commented, "It's sad to see a project begun with such excitement (and such a budget, oy -- there were THREE editors at one time!) come to such a quiet and unlamented end, without even time for a whimper."

Why should they pay so much money for something Free Republic will do for them for free?

Possibly paving the way for the return of Dan Rather when they finally do something about the Katie fiasco?

That's hilarious! So they are getting rid of any news or editorial accountability because holding their reporters and editors accountable doesn't make money?

That's exactly like getting rid of policemen because they don't make money for a city!

I can assure you that in the Long Term getting rid of the Ombudsman will cost them viewers and money.

They could not find anyone of substance that would not out them as being biased!

Ombudsman for a liberal MSM outfit is not a position with good job security.

The NYTimes has been through a bunch of them, because sooner or later they get provoked by reader complaints and admit that their bosses screwed up. And then they’re out of there.

Before the "ombudsman's" time, but I never got a reply to a complaint I sent to CBS about them having Bill Clinton on Letterman on the first anniversary of 9/11.

Since then, I go out of my way to not watch CBS. I even turn off the radio when "Katie Couric's Notebook" comes on.

Ahhh...

Exploding pickup trucks was NBC's deal.

CBS was a phony memo designed to change the outcome of a Presidential election. No ombudsman was involved in exposing the lie; it was done almost simultaneously by two people, one of whom was a Freeper.

Hey CBS, I'll take the job for free.

I'm an excellent obituary writer, also.

Clearly CBS has no need for an ombudsman since no one has ever found any of their stories to be inaccurate.

The Tooth Fairy told me that.
