Madrid, Jan. 3, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Spanish government leaders have asked the country's Catholic bishops to apologize for the massive pro-family rally held in Madrid on December 30, Vatican Radio reports.
Leaders of the Socialist governing party have charged that the Church intervened in partisan political affairs with the rally, which drew nearly 2 million participants. (The government is reporting that only 160,000 took part in the demonstration.) The government has asked the bishops' conference for an apology.
Although 40 bishops took part in the pro-family event, and the hierarchy gave clear support to the event, the rally was organized primarily by lay Catholic activists. The organizers have consistently argued that the rally was not intended as a partisan political event, but as a public expression of support for the traditional family founded on Christian marriage.
Perhaps it is time for the King to take a more active role in the affairs of state.
Satire? Please?
But it's okay when Muslims blow up those same people and put Socialists in power - that's not "intervening", is it?
its typical of leftists to outlaw opposition speech
If I were the Church I would say “no”.
it’s not wrong to stand for God’s word, and pro-family policies that are based on an adherence toward that! As a protestant Christian, I stand with all my faithful Catholic friends ;)!
Pray for all the socialist!
I don't think the socialists believe in Catholics period.
Even if it was, so what? The secular socialists can stick it.

No. When the "Republican" government came to power, one of the first thing they did was to start shooting priests and nuns. Those were the folks that Franco defeated.
Just say it in clear words for criticism against Catholic peace protesters as “fascism” in from of these leftsists.
Those people need to stop beating their bishops and get back to work.
They have been fighting very hard in Spain. The current Socialist government is probably the most overtly anti-Christian in Europe and has been launching really aggressive attacks on the Church itself and on Christian moral teachings in general. Of course, the government is supported by the press, particularly El Pais (Spanish version of the New York Times!) which regularly distorts and ridicules anything Christian.
The Pope actually made a comment on the Madrid rally, btw, congratulating Spaniards on turning out for it. That must have frosted Zapatero!
Notice that this pro-family rally was organized by laypeople. There are a number of active lay groups in Spain, just as there were prior to the Spanish Civil War. And when the “Republicans” got into power in the 30s, they also hauled out lay leaders, ranging from people in Catholic social welfare groups, sodalities and confraternities, to village sacristans, and killed thousands of them.
The wrath of the left is savage and all-encompassing, and I hope it doesn’t get free rein again.
