GOP Looking for Revenge in Texas
CQ TODAY ^ | January 3, 2008 | Greg Giroux

CQ TODAY Jan. 3, 2008 – 5:09 p.m. GOP Looking for Revenge in Texas By Greg Giroux, CQ Staff In one of the earliest deadlines in the country, the period to qualify for Texas’ March 4 primary election ended on Wednesday, and it’s clear that Republicans will fight hard to reclaim the two Texas districts they lost in 2006.

The 22nd is a Houston-area district that is represented by Nick Lampson , and the 23rd District is a San Antonio-centered district that is held by Ciro D. Rodriguez . Those are the districts the Democrats wrested from Republican control in 2006 en route to winning a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Few if any Democratic victories in 2006 were more embarrassing to Republicans than Lampson’s win in Texas’ 22nd, a Republican-leaning area that had been represented by Tom DeLay, the former House Majority Leader who resigned in June 2006 after becoming politically weakened by ethics controversies.

it’s a long article. I agree the final “.” should have come a lot sooner.

These are two of the districts that the Republicans in effect gave to the Democrats in 2006?

In general, it’s more like: “GOP looking for revenge...if that doesn’t make us look too mean or offend Ted Kennedy or anything because we want to be all bipartisan and all.”

Actually, it was ole Tom DeLay that gave part of my district to the idiot liberal, Lloyd Dogette! DeLay messed about with the district lines, and we ended up coupled with a district that had elected Dogette. (I'm not sure I'm spelling the guy's name right)

Anyway, Mr. Dogette is now my representative instead of Ron Paul. What a switch--LOL!

"messed about with the district lines"

Do you mean gerrymandered?

Have you ever seen the map of the democratic snake district that reached from Austin to the Valley that Tom created? If you look up Gerrymander at Wikipedia, they use that district as an example.

The rematch-minded Sekula Gibbs will be vigorously challenged in a March GOP primary that includes....

Shelly Gibbs was on Houston city council, she ran and won the race for the remainder of DeLay's term when he resigned. One of her last votes before skipping out of council to run for DeLay's position was to outlaw smoking in privately owned businesses. She claims to be a conservative. Bull. Pure opportunist RINO. She went to congress for two months and acted like she was some hotshot about to change the world, it was a disgusting display of hunger for power. If she wins the (R)INO nomination, she will not get my vote.

I think “gerymandering” has long been a Texas tradition. I never paid much attention to it until it affected me, though. I think it has it’s good and bad points—ie, if it helps Republicans, it’s good, if it helps Dims, it’s bad—LOL!

About 80% of the House districts are safe districts/gerrymandered, and the Dems and GOP have an unwritten gentleman’s agreement about these safe districts. Which is why, when Delay broke the agreement, the dems were furious.
