Nicolas Sarkozy 'to wed Carla Bruni next month'
Charles Bremner, of The Times, Paris
President Sarkozy is planning to marry Carla Bruni, his singer girlfriend, in early February, just over two months after meeting her and three since his wife divorced him, according to French and Italian reports today.
As the Elysee Palace made no attempt to deny an imminent wedding, pollsters said that the President's exhibition of the former Italian supermodel and his haste in replacing Cecilia, his wife, explained part of a seven-point slump in his approval rating over the past month.
"Speedy Sarko", 52, today gave the traditionalists more reason to view his conduct as unseemly when he posed for photographers holding hands with Ms Bruni, 40, on a trip to Jordan as guests of King Adullah II.
Talk of marriage has been in the air since Mr Sarkozy paraded Ms Bruni, kissing and whispering with her, on a trip to Egypt over Christmas and Marisa Tedeschi Bruni, her mother, told newspapers that the president had asked for her daughter's hand. "I said to him, 'Monsieur le President, I have no reason to refuse'," she said.
"If Carla becomes the first lady of France, she must keep space and time for herself to write," Ms Tedeschi Bruni said. "Carla is living an authentic love story. I think that they make a good couple," she told Le Parisien newspaper last week.
A wedding is provisionally planned for February 8 or 9, according to today's Journal du Dimanche, the only national Sunday newspaper. "The couple who show off their love on the covers of glossy magazines...can't wait any longer," it said.
Mr Sarkozy's display of his high-speed romance and his taste for "le bling bling", has turned the tradition of presidential decorum on its head and helped sour his image as France enters a New Year in a state of anxiety over the economy.
His approval rating has dropped below 50 per cent for the first time since his election last May. The monthly CSA poll showed that 48 percent expressed confidence in Mr Sarkozy compared with 55 percent in December and 65 percent last summer. Those with no confidence rose seven points to 45 percent.
The main cause of the slump is Mr Sarkozy's inability to fulfil campaign promises to halt a slide in the economy which has left the French feeling poorer than at any time since the early 1990s. He promised in a new year's television address to deliver this year, but Christine Lagarde, the Finance Minister, warned over the weekend that France faced higher inflation and a struggle to weather the global slowdown.
Stephane Rozès, director of the CSA polling agency, also blamed Mr Sarkozy's exhibition of his wealth and love-life. "Traditional supporters of his party, especially the older group over 55, take a dim view of what they see as behaviour that is vulgar and not in keeping with his role as head of state," Mr Rozes said.
The "Sark-opera", as it is called, has opened the President to attack from the opposition Socialists, who have still not recovered from his defeat of Segolène Royal, their candidate, last May. Ms Royal said that Mr Sarkozy, who is twice divorced, is “undermining the dignity” of his office. Arnaud Montebourg, an outspoken Socialist MP, said: “This presidency makes me think of the decadence of the Romans."
The pop psychologists and dinner table chat holds that Mr Sarkozy is revealing a vulnerable side with his rush to become an official couple with Ms Bruni, a woman whose prolific past love life has earned her the nickname of "man-eater". Her past conquests range from Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton to former French Prime Ministers.
With her slanting eyes and high cheekbones, the slender former model bears an extraordinary likeness to the former Cecilia Sarkozy, who humiliated the President by refusing his entreaties to stay and walking out last October. "It's pathetic. He has rushed in on the rebound to fill the vacuum and stick it to Cecilia," a former Cabinet Minister of President Chirac told The Times.
Mr Sarkozy's weekend trip with Ms Bruni to the ancient Jordanian city of Petra stirred comment today. It was there that Cecilia Sarkozy began an affair with Richard Attias, an events organiser, in late 2004. Although she returned to Mr Sarkozy a year later, the Petra escapade is seen to have marked the end of the Sarkozy marriage.
The President is expected to give an account of his private life at a press conference tomorrow. He has called a two-hour meeting with the media at the Elysee Palace, reviving a format that has not been used since the late President Mitterrand in the early 1990s. The former Mrs Sarkozy is also preparing to deliver her version of life with Sarko in a book that she is writing with a journalist. Mr Sarkozy is said to be eager for an advance copy, but the publishers are maintaining absolute secrecy around the project.

what’s wrong with her hamstring? It looks like it sort of plugged into to what comes next, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In some of those photos I see a hint of a resemblance to Sego - could be that a lot of beautiful francaises have that same “look”.
Was referring to pics more along the lines of the one in #7. :)
Wow! I like the new rule...
I’d never trust a woman who’s latches onto the rich and famous like that. Date her, but not marry her.
