SOURCES: NBC And Hollywood Foreign Press Association Cancel Televised Golden Globes
LA Weekly ^ | 1/7/08 | Nikki Finke

Posted on 01/07/2008 11:45:21 AM PST by BurbankKarl

The Hollywood writers strike can now claim its first awards show casualty. The latest I'm hearing from my sources as of a few minutes ago is that NBC will not be televising the Golden Globes as planned on January 13th. Insiders tell me also that the entire event, even if it were held untelevised, will be cancelled. And the Hollywood Foreign Press Association instead will merely make an announcement of the winners. I've not yet received any official confirmation of any of this. But insiders tell me that NBC Universal topper Jeff Zucker and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which bestows the Golden Globes made the decision together.

... the Oscars have credibility.

You forgot your sarcasm tag. Someone here might think you were serious.

I am serious. The awards are given by people within their profession. You don’t think an editor knows good editing when he sees it? Or a costume desginer knows good costume designing?

I stopped watching those vapid, self-congratulatory celebrity vanity shows a long time ago.

As opposed to all the documentaries about the Holocaust that have won. Yeah it invalidates all of them. /sarc

I love the category during the Awards Shows where they present the best editing for an Awards Show and the Awards Show’s last show wins.

Makes my head spin.

I was kinda hoping for the Awards Shows. Now that the Writers are on strike, the presenters won’t have to make those lame unfunny comments before the actual presentations.
The whole show would last 42 minutes...tops.

The Emmys do that and it’s a joke. The Emmys are non-sensical as currently constituted.

Why would it be a good thing is a longstanding American tradition (over 80 years)like the Oscars were cancelled? Unlike the Golden Globes, the Oscars have credibility.

Many people share your opinion of the Academy Awards program, my wife among them.  I find it to be four to five hours of insufferable, disgusting beautiful people celebrating other beautiful people, while they rip our nation in the process.  It's as if $20 million dollars per movie were not enough acknowledgement for some people.  No, on top of that they must be acknowedged in public as some of the premier citizens in this nation, during a program that is both insulting to the nation and it's loyal citizens.

Frankly, it sickens me.

You state that the Oscars have credibility.  When Michael Moore can earn one for bashing people with half truths and lies to further his marxist agenda, the Oscar means nothing.  Every Oscar ever given is worthless if the likes of Moore is actually deemed due one based on the lack of ethics it would take to do what he did.  If I had earned an Oscar prior to Moore receiving one, I would call a press conference and announce that I was returning it, and why.

We'll hear how the right squelched the financial success of some of the outlandish marxist disinformation offerings this year.  We'll see movies shown at the Cane Film Festival that denounce the United States, it's military and it's president.  We have a very good chance of seeing the people who created this tripe heralded as some of the brightest minds in our nation, the true concience of America.

I can't support this awards program.  It's disgusting on so many levels, that I simply cannot understand how a good conservative could.

I'm not saying this to besmirch your character.  If you can watch it and enjoy it, I'm okay with it.  I've had to accept that my wife does.  I can accept that others do as well.

Take care.

Oh, you meant the technical awards. The ones that few care about. Honestly, when was the last time you wanted to see a movie because it won an Oscar for best editing or costume design?

You can go through any 80 year plus organization and find decisions to quibble with. The idea that one out of however many awards went to someone like Moore doesn’t really mean anything in the long run. F9-11 got 0 nominations. Does that invalidate his earlier award? I don’tt know which bashing you’re talking about as most of the awards are for technical categories and for those people it’s the only moment in the spotlight. Same principle applies..if one award recipient goes on a political diatribe (which is discouraged by the producers and usually interrupted by the pit orchestra..Moore got booed off the stage 5 years ago) it has nothing to do with the idea of an Industry Award in general.

Editing is important! It’s the one aspect of movies that’s new and not derived from theater. It’s like visual music and I love seeing it done well.

I couldn’t have said it better. The Oscars and the Grammys are the worst.

If I were to waste my time doing so, I could probably come up with ten to twenty such violations given time. I’m not going to bother.

How many awards programs go to people who are the backbone of our society? If anything those people are slandered at every opportunity, and the media is generally the one doing it.

Good values, Christian ethic... the Oscars have nothing to offer the best our society, other than to destroy the values they cherish.
