NEW DELHI: India, it seems, feels it's for the French to decide what status should be accorded to supermodel-turned-singer Carla Bruni if she indeed comes visiting with French president Nicolas Sarkozy later this month.
Amid reports that Sarkozy (52) may tie the knot with Bruni (39) early next month, after some weeks of a highly-publicised courtship, with business often being mixed with pleasure during his foreign visits, an external affairs ministry official on Monday said, ''There will no protocol problems from our side if she comes.''
''It is for the French to decide whether she should be treated as the 'first lady' or not. If they so desire, she will be part of the ceremonial reception and other official functions,'' he said.
''But if the French tell us she is just a part of the official delegation, she will be treated as a simple delegate, without the privileges accorded to first ladies,'' he added.
Amid all the hullabaloo about whether Bruni will accompany Sarkozy on his high-level visit to India beginning on January 24, or pull out at the last minute, the preparations of course are in full swing. Sources say the Kohinoor suite at The Oberoi in New Delhi has been booked for Sarkozy, who will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade on January 26.
Whether Bruni will 'share' the 3,600 square feet grand suite at Oberoi is in the realm of speculation at this point in time. ''She might peel off to Agra or Rajasthan to avoid protocol hassles,'' said an official. The MEA, despite its protestations to the contrary, is in some kind of a flap since it has never dealt with ''a companion'', other than a spouse, of a visiting head of state.
Sarkozy - who divorced his second wife Cecilia last October after 11 years of a tempestuous marriage - and Bruni recently left some of their hosts in Egypt and Jordan a little red-faced with their close proximity to each other in full public view.
The couple, on their part, however, did not seem too bothered with all the frenzied attention by the paparazzi.
French observers, in fact, see Sarkozy's decision to publicise his romance with Bruni as an attempt to shore up his falling ratings within his country. Will a picture in the backdrop of Taj Mahal, the spectacular ode to love, do the needful?
I always thought Carla Bruni was hot back in the day....
Mrs Sarkozy didnt waste any time bailing....

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is telling Mr. Sarkozy to leave her at home.
Right now she is just his main squeeze.
It’s funny to me ‘cause I discovered her songs a few months ago and YouTube and had absolutely no idea before then who she was..... but I like some of her songs...... she’ll never be confused with a great singer but I find some of her songs enjoyable.
She should perform her songs on state visits:

I don’t know where that fits into diplomatic protocol, but it would be a first so far as I know........ “First Lady entertains the crowd with songs of heartbreak and loss....”
I know, I know, she’s very good looking. But Sarkozy is making a big mistake. This threatens to undermine his political aims. And on a more personal level, it’s the same damned mistake he made in his last marriage—a beautiful, ambitious wife with no moral character.
She’ll dump him as soon as the gloss wears off, just like the last one. She’ll leave just as soon as she spots someone richer and more powerful.
Maybe he should spend less time going after supermodels and more time worrying about those car-burning youts.
TOok 11 years for the gloss to wear off.
Musta been a lot of "gloss."
Like someone on another post mentioned, the hosts just need to be told she has a position on his staff, lol!
I think Sarkozy will be just fine. On another hand if his squeeze looked like any of Bill’s - he’d be in trouble. A bad taste would be less forgiven.
I think I’m speaking less from a judgmental point of view than a common sense point of view, although who knows?
In any case, this immediately reminded me of Samuel Johnson’s definition of second marriage: “The triumph of hope over experience.” Maybe this is different, but it does look to me like making the same mistake twice.
But who can be faulted for the mistake like that? really
