WASHINGTON - U.S. admissions of Iraqi refugees are nose-diving amid bureaucratic in-fighting despite the Bush administration's pledge to boost them to roughly 1,000 per month, according to State Department statistics obtained by The Associated Press.
For the third straight month since the United States said it would improve processing and resettle 12,000 Iraqis by the end of the current budget year on Sept. 30., the number admitted has actually slid, the figures show.
The steady decline -- from 450 in October to 362 in November and 245 in December -- means the administration will have to allow in 10,943 Iraqis over the next nine months, or roughly 1,215 per month, to meet the target it has set for itself.
But that goal will be difficult to meet and there are few precedents for such large influxes since hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese refugees were resettled here after the Vietnam War ended in 1975.
In the past five years, with few exceptions, notably Somalia and Liberia, the United States has never been able to admit more than 1,000 refugees per month from any country, according to an AP review of statistics from the State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration.

Why are we obligated to take in any refugees at all. We are making the ultimate sacrifice to make their lives better in their own country.
Well thank heavens. Iraqis should be staying in Iraq and helping to building a decent, civilized country, not coming here and climbing on the gravy train. It’s the least they could do given the amount of blood and treasure the people of the United States have sacrificed on their behalf. We owe them nothing more.

Agreed, there is absolutely no reason to support staying in this country if all that happens is they send the trash over here. Time to bring the troops home.

I think these may be Christian Iraqi's fleeing persecution. If they are Muslim, they should stay in their own country.
It sure as heck better be lagging. Until we start profiling and finger-printing and microchipping them.

They are coming back into Iraq from exile in Syria and Jordan in droves....to what, clime on a plane to NYC?
Our guys are fighting and dying to give them a country and someone here [my guess is The State Department...Condi] is encouraging them to come over here and sign up for welfare??
Man.....have we ever screwed this thing up.
Now if we would just deport 12,000 Mexican criminals...that might be a fair trade.
